View Full Version : Anyone know anything about silvadene?

DS touched a hot pot tonight while I was cooking and burned his fingertips. We went to Urgent Care where the doctor gave us silvadene to put on DS' fingers. He suggested we put it on DS while he's sleeping. I'm afraid DS will put his fingers in his eyes or his mouth in his sleep. We've got a mitten on his hand right now - I couldn't get gauze to stay since we were trying to do it while he was asleep. Is the silvadene harmful if it gets in his eyes or mouth? I didn't even think to ask the doctor (I think I was just so relieved that he was okay) and I haven't found any info online yet.

TIA,
~Linda~

Silvadene is amazing stuff. I've used it many times on burns. Just know that in light of his allergies, it's a sulfa-based drug (is he allergic to Bactrim?). Poor Reeve. I would try and keep his hand covered. If nothing else, just put it immediately on the burned areas, and then maybe a sock puppet to keep him happy?

Aloe would be OK if ingested (only the pure stuff - not the sunburn stuff) - you can get it at Whole Foods, etc. The other option is to brew some really strong tea (plain old Lipton's), cool it down and then either let him play in the tea itself, or let him hold the teabags. The tannin in the tea takes the sting out (also good for sunburn!). In fact, it might be easy just to make a huge batch of tea, and then pour it into his water table for him to splash in.

Just remember not to pop any blisters that may form.

Kiss him for me

Thanks, m! Reeve is sleeping with a mitten on his hand right now. I just found a 24 hour pharmacist who said to keep a sock taped to his hand so he can't get the silvadene in his eyes or mouth. He said it's not toxic, but it wouldn't be good. Tea in the water table sounds like a great idea for tomorrow.

I can't believe you're still awake. Whenever I need medical advice for my kiddo, you are inevitably having a late night (thank goodness!)

Hugs to you,

hmm, used it all of the time when i used to rotate onto the wound care service, but never had that question come up... and it is a good one. hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in, but here's what i know. it is a sulfa based, topical antibiotic/antifungal. it does have a long and good track record for the kind of use you're describing in your ds.

if you haven't had time to search, here is the closest applicable link i could find on ingestion - scroll almost to the bottom, the last three entries are about using silvadene on nipples while nursing...

fwiw, i'd probably put a call into whoever is on call for your pedi, or if your insurance has a nursing line, you could try that. another thought might be your local 24 hour walgreens and asking to talk to the pharmacist.

Thanks for the info, Lori. I just chatted with a Walgreens pharmacist who said it's not toxic if ingested, but it's not good and avoid it. So, my little one will be wearing a mitten or a sock for the next few days. We'll deal with that and be extremely grateful it wasn't anything worse.

Thanks again,

not that this is the same situation but...

we used the same cream on my dog's hind leg for about 2 months while he received radiation. it was an area that he could easily lick and we were not warned of any problems with him ingesting the cream. we just tried to keep him from doing it so that his leg would heel better. still - i'm sure he licked up lots of it and he was just fine :)
