View Full Version : Should I take DD to the hospital?

I called the ped and left a message for the nurse about 15 minutes ago. But I am sitting here looking at my very sick little girl wondering if I should take her to the hospital instead of waiting for a call back.
Last night she woke around 12am with a fever of 102, so DH fed her ice chips and she had some water and fell back asleep. DD slept until 9:30am which is odd for her, but I attributed that to the fact that she wasn't feeling well and she woke up in the middle of the night.
Well she woke up screaming and cried for almost an hour. She still had a fever of 102 and her little heart was pounding. I finally got her calmed down and she asked for milk. She took two sips and pushed it away. So I offered ice chips, she said o.k. but then when I got them she pushed them away (VERY weird). She's always eaten ice chips, even when really really sick with the flu two weeks ago. So I offered apple juice and got her to take a couple of swigs, I've been offering liquids every 15 minutes or so since her fever is still around 101 even after Tylenol (gave it to her at 9:45ish), her heart rate is still elevated. She is lethargic and glassy eyed, laying on the couch not doing anything, which is so strange for her. As far as I can tell she's not acting disoriented.

So what do you mamas think? Take her to the hospital? Wait for the ped's nurse to call back? I can't get ahold of DH he had a new training class start today so he won't be at his desk at all today. I don't know if he gave her tylenol last night or not, I am going to say he didn't though.

Definitely the hospital - if not for the lethargy, I might wait it out, but with it I'd head out ASAP.

I agree with Petra, head for the hospital or at least an urgent care center. It sounds like your gut is telling you that something isn't right. Sending big hugs to you and Maddy!!!

The fever alone is not a big deal, but the lethargy worries me. I'd head for the hospital if you don't hear back in 5 minutes.

I hope she feels better soon. :(

I'm not sure if your ped's office works like ours does but with ours I can always get a receptionist but often get voice mail for the nurse. In a situation like this I think I would call and push the button to talk to the receptionist/schedule an appointment, explain the situation and ask to speak to the nurse right away. I'm not sure if that's frowned upon in doctors' offices or not, but I think it's justifiable in situations like this. If you don't want to do that, or can't get a response fairly soon (like by the time it takes you to gather up everything you need to get out the door--which I assume takes awhile with two in tow), I'd head on out to the ER or urgent care clinic.
Hope Maddy is feeling better soon!

Ditto hospital!

My ped said for a child it's not the temp that is important (as long as it does go down w/meds) but the way your child is acting and your DD sounds like she is acting way out of the norm.

I hope she gets better SOON!

I'd tend to say skip the hospital for now since you could be waiting for HOURS, plus she'll be exposed to all the other yucky stuff that lingers in the ER (and so will Jarred). However, if you can't get into the ped this morning, then I'd probably risk the ER.

when dylan acted this way, he was dehydrated and required an IV. you need to go to the ped's office without waiting for a call back OR an urgent care OR the hospital. but i believe she needs medical attention, probably IV fluids.

OK, Christy, it's been a while. How's Maddy? Did you hear from the ped and go there or did you go to the ER?

Let us know how she's doing. Hugs to you and your little one.

As a matter of fact is still sleeping from the car ride home, very unorthodox. She is still running a fever and not eating. I have been able to get her to take a few sips of apple juice/water every half hour or so pretty consistently.

I called the Ped's office and pressed the button to make an appointment (thank you Sherri). I explained that I needed to bring her in right away or I was taking her to urgent care. So they said to bring her in, so I packed up the kids in record time and ran out the door.

They saw us right away, which was so nice. Ped looked at her ears, throat, belly and listened to her lungs/heart. She said her heart rate is still elevated but her ears, lungs and belly seem fine. Her throat was red, so Ped did a rapid strep test and it came back negative. She thinks her heart rate is elevated because of the fever. She is still running a fever of 102 after Tylenol. So she said to keep an eye on her for 48 hours and if she doesn't get any better to bring her back in.

I am still very worried, normally in the past she at least will veg out in front of the TV or something, but she isn't even interested in watching Blue. I am really hoping her fever breaks soon. I am going to try the pedialyte popsicles when she wakes up. Gosh I wish she could tell me if she hurt anywhere. She cried hysterically for over an hour this morning when she woke up and then again at the Dr.'s office. My poor Squirmy...

I just checked my messages, the nurse called while we in the office. 2 hours after my initial call. *Sigh*

Big hugs, Christy, and get well vibes to Maddy.

It's so scary when little ones are sick, I know. Have you tried Motrin for her fever? We have had luck with that when Tylenol doesn't do the job.

I hope that Maddy feels better soon! We also alternate the Motrin with Tylenol when avi is sick. He had a fever for a few days two weeks ago, missed a week of day care. I hope that Maddy feels better when she wakes up.

Don't hesitate to call the dr again and again if they do not get back to you right away, it is good that you went in.

Poor Maddy! DD had a stomach bug a while back and what really bothered me was her listlessness. When we'd pick her up she'd just hang there like a ragdoll. The ped assured us it was what was going around and as long as she had no signs of dehydration, just watch her closely, ride it out, and she should be fine within a couple of days. Sure enough, she did perk up and it turns out it went around her whole playgroup. Hope your punkin is feeling better soon!!

Hi Christy,

I hope that Maddy is feeling better.

DS had the very same symptoms a while back. I was beside myself. Of course it happened over the weekend. Turned out to be Roseola. Usually those really high fevers are nasty viruses. As a matter of fact we just came back from the doc with a strep diagnosis.

We mashed up ice pops and DS ate them with his spoon. That seemed to work to hydrate. We also put his liquids in a "Mommy Cup" and let him sip them from that. Both those tricks helped a little, but I know what you are going through.

Here is hoping her fever breaks soon. Let us know how she is doing.

Take care,

Thanks for checking Eileen!

Maddy is doing better, she still has a slight fever, but was much more 'herself' today. She didn't eat much today, which I am wondering if she has a stomach virus or something. She took her nap without any battle at all yesterday and today which is very odd for her, so I know she isn't 100%. I know things are looking up though, she asked for her car before bed! (Her cozy coupe car that is outside. :))

She really scared me out though, everytime she gets a fever all I can think about are all those stories I've heard over the years of little kids getting the flu and then having to be hospitalized or worse. I really am not one to rush my kids in to the Dr. but at the first sign of not drinking I start freaking out a little. She worried me so much because she got so sick so quickly.

Hopefully she will continue to improve tomorrow and I can rest easy. :)
