I haven't been able to access the full text, but the abstract shows some interesting facts.

First off this was an observational study, not randomized. The parents chose when to start cereal and it was simply observed.

The wheat allergy was reported by the parents. They only did a blood test on the patients whose parents reported a wheat allergy. Out of those patients, only 1/4 (4 of 16) showed immune responses to wheat. Having a first degree relative with asthma, excema or hives was also associated with an increase in wheat allergy.

So, why do parents delay solids? Well, having a relative with allergic disease would be a big reason.

Also, parents who delayed solids might also be more aware of food allergy issues and therefore more likely to suspect and report a food-allergy.

Without the full text, it is hard to say if any of these factors were accounted for by the authors.

Thanks, it still asks me to log in or pay (boy do I miss my work access). I'm not obsessivly interested, but thought I'd throw out some critique of the article.
