Okay, so DH is a SAHD and he shops with DD far, far more than I do. (Love it when they come home and I ask DD what they did and she proclaims "SHOP!"). Anyway, this morning he mentioned that she will have to stop sitting in the regular shopping carts once she is heavy enough for us to turn her carseat around.

She is 21 months but not yet 33 lbs so we still have her rear-facing in the car. He said that all the shopping carts state a 33 lb. weight limit also.

I had no idea! I know they have the carts for older kids (like cars, etc.) but does everyone really stop using the shopping cart seats at 33 lbs?

I know DD will be near that around 2-2.5 years, and I know I have seen much older/bigger kids in the seats.

I don't think I've seen a weight limit on any of the shopping carts here, although I've wondered about it. Alex is approx 37 pounds, and he still rides in the shopping cart seat although it is becoming a tight squeeze. Some days he walks, but he prefers to ride.

i * just# saw a 35 lb. limit at a store the other day. dd's only 26.5 now so we have plenty of time but i have seen older kids in them as well.

I wondered about that as well. I haven't seen any posted limit on our carts, but I am going to check. Shouldn't be a concern for DD as she is only 23 lbs, but it might be for DS he is 15 lbs already!!

Thank you for posting, Holli.

I hadn't heard of this either. I have seen some bigger children in them. I have also seen children in the actual cart (but I guess that is another story).
Anyway, I will look for a sign or ask next time I am at a store.

DS was 40 lbs at his 3 year checkuo, and I had stopped putting him carts a few months before-he was just too heavy for me to lift in and out. Still, I'm sure he was still riding at 35 lbs or so.

He is only 32 lbs?! Wow! Mari is still very "sturdy" I guess. LOL She weighs about 28 lbs now and is mostly muscle. Hmm. Maybe she won't reach 33 as soon as I thought.

Okay, it sounds like I'm not the only one who had no idea! I can't find any info about it online. DH claims he read or saw a show about shopping cart accidents, including improper use from kids being too heavy and it toppling over.

He is not a worrier by nature so I was surprised he brought this up. But the thought of shopping without a cart... yipes..not ready for that!

I did google searches and I cannot find anything.

Avi is 34+ pds and sits in the carts all the time. I have seen much bigger kids in the carts. I dont know what we would do if he couldn't fit, although his stroller is nice it can only hold so much in the small basket.....

LOL. At least your Dh is thinking about stuff like this.

Ds occasionally still rides (when Dh is a long as I can't lift Ds while wearing Dd). He's 4 yrs and 40+ lbs. I'm thinking a small cart like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be questionable, but something like Target or Costco is pretty sturdy. To be honest, it's his feet that have trouble with the leg holes! LOL. That's why I stopped putting him in when I was PG, it was too hard to get him out. Sometimes, again with sturdy carts, I allow him to stand on the end to help pass the time.

He has consistently been on the lower end for his weight since he was a baby. All of his friends were 30 lbs at their 2 year appointments. He was 23 I think. Well you have seen him- he is just a skinny little guy!!

I owe you an email btw. :)

Sarah is 4 (5 in 2 months), 43 inches and 43 pounds. She still rides in the shopping cart. Getting her in and out is getting harder for me, but thats one reason why I do weight training at the gym. ;) She's gonna sit in that cart for as long as I can possibly manage it!

Sometimes stores have "car carts" where the front of the cart has a section for the kids to sit in. I don't like those because a) those carts are MUCH harder to steer, b) she can get in and out by herself and its a PITA and c) she actually has a hard time fitting in them now.

I'm with Beth here. C is almost 40 lbs and I think nothing of sticking my guy in those carts. It never ocurred to me that I wouldn't put him there, and that there would be any weight limits. In all truth, I get the whole weight-limit for carseat thing, but I'm not doing the soapbox derby with the shopping carts, and I can't fathom a big problem arising from sticking my guy in the cart. I had no idea I was such a big risk taker.... ;) :P

Alia is 4 years old and 32 pounds, and she still rides in the seat. DH recently mentioned that he was wondering when she would be too heavy since the cart could tip with too much weight in the seat part. Our carts do not have weight limits (that I have seen anyway). We have tried a few times to let Alia walk, but some days she's fine and others she really needs to ride!
