http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e192/karolyp/IMG_3838.jpg

Taking these pics was extremely hard (as another member pointed out in an earlier thread). However, I used some of the great advice that was given a couple days ago and put stickers on the back of the letters and a rubber band to keep her attention on the letter instead of throwing it!! So thank you very very much for those great ideas!

Thanks Corie and Leah! That was actually rounds 2 and 3. I was trying to snap them while DH was in the shower or out back mowing the yard because the first batch didn't turn out well- she had purple circles under her eyes that matched her purple outfit. The A pic is what sealed the deal with these, but I didn't have a good Y so we did a second session after lunch- notice the drool on one of the D pics. Thank you all so much for letting me shamelessly steal this idea. It's fantastic!!! Now I just need to go buy a frame!

Yeah, I'm having the same question. We have about 2 pictures hung in our house because we're terrified of our plaster walls, but this is the best idea!!!

I got my frame at Bed Bath and Beyond. They had one wooden one for $39, one for $19 (which I got but am not crazy about), and one metal one online that I really like but doesn't go with our decor.

DH is getting the pics and then the Darth Tater and Spud Trooper that was on sale in a package deal on the bargains forum a few months back for $12. He's a huge star wars fan and constantly telling DD "I am your father" in the Darth Vader voice. It's pretty cute.

I'm going to attempt to have her give him the potato heads with the card from her and I give him the pics with my card, but don't have anything special planned. I'd love to steal someone else's good idea though!

I actually ahdn't intended all the outfit changes. originally they were all supposed to be in her plaid skirt.
In the morning (she's still in pajamas) she climbed into her rocking chair for the very first time by herself and she just looked so cute I figured that if I was going to take a pic I might as well see if she'd hold a letter.
The last one she is wearing her swim suit of all things. We were waiting for grandma to srrive and she started walking around with the A all on her own, so I grabbed a couple shots. Now I'm glad I did because they turned out to b ethe best ones.

Yes, thanks to all for posting!

Next year I am planning on taking a pic of Mia with A-D-D-Y and replacing this years letters, just leaving the first D from this year. In five years from now he will have one pic from each year.
Clear as mud?

Can't take credit for that idea...I read it on these boards somewhere.

I think it is funny (well, not for the ppl that need a frame) that Bed Bath and Beyond and Linen and things are both sold out of the five opening frames. Could it have anything to do with the DADDY pics?????? :-)

lmintzer
06-14-2006, 08:55 AM
Ashley,
I thought about doing that, actually. I have DADDY pictures from 2 previous years, but it got hard when I had my second child. I wasn't sure which pictures to pull out, etc.

So, each year, it's been a new DADDY project. Mine is still in progress this year.

So far my plan is to do what Ashley says. Again, I"m shamelessy copying from another BBBer on that, but it's too cute. I really like the idea of having her first 5 years in that (too bad the A pic is my favorite this year).

I figure if we have number 2, I will just do the same for that DC so we have the same for each. Or do the rest as combo pictures in chronological order. Haven't decided, but it's not an issue yet :)

These are all SOO cute. Laurel, where did you get those huge letters? They area neat--they really show up. Each year, I say I'm going to skip doing this (this is my 3rd set of DADDY pix, lol), but it's so much fun, and then the kids have gone and changed. : )

I took my pix of the boys at home (didn't try to go outside this year--they would have clamored to go to the park). Eileen (mudder17) helped me make the collage using Photoshop. We decided to take the not-so-fantastic background out, and this is what we came up with. Jack was (surprisingly) into it, but Joshua was more challenging. This collage is going in a panoramic frame (had to do something a little different this year).

Lisa, those pics are adorable! I especially like the first two - Ds1 looks so triumphant and I love the eyes on DS2 with the A.

In answer to your question about my letters, I bought the from an EBAY seller abc123scrapbooking - you can choose from several sizes and fonts (I got the 12"). I did like how they turned out in the pictures but they did pose some problems as well. For one, they are made of lucite and very very thin - DS was obsessed with the A and it wound up breaking somewhat easily (although I can tape it together pretty easily, but still). Also, the back side is brown, which made it harder to get good pics since I was trying for all white letters. Although this worked out in the pic where DS is holding the D up - the brown stands out better against the sky.

These were a decent deal (something like $18 including shipping for all, since shipping was $8, if you got more letters you'd be paying a lot less per letter) but if I do this again I might just go to a local sign maker and get the letters done in wood.

We'll see how this goes over with DH. Next year I might get a t-shirt done, or a mug. But no time for that now!

Thanks for the compliments. Eileen definitely worked some magic. I know Photshop Elements a little, but not well enough to do this. And everything always takes way longer than it should. I always get stuck with how to resize and how to import pictures--the easy stuff throws me off.

I think the A is pretty funny too. I wish I had gotten a smiling photo of Joshua, though, His whole face lights up when he smiles. Oh well. DH gets to see him smile every day.

Ashley--your little Mia is such a doll. She literally looks like a baby doll in those pix. So sweet!

Laurel--I can see how those letters would be a challenge. But boy, they sure made for some neat pictures (the cute and cooperative subjects don't hurt either). My letters are solid as a rock--they've lasted through 3 years as props. They've been thrown, chewed on, you name it.

Michelle--your dd is adorable, and your pix are very sweet even without Photoshop. I did the separates in a 5 opening frame for the last 2 years. This is the first time I tried a collage.

Tondi,
The DADDY idea has been around for a bit. I remember it first when Jack (who is just a little older than Mason) was 2. That's the first year we did it, and they came out very cute. I remember bribing him with some treat from the local coffee shop. : )

Gosh, now I'm getting nostalgic. I know you've been around the boards almost as long as I have. I remember you raving about your first Pliko. : ) I think it was one of the reasons we eventually got a P3 (which IS our double stroller these days).

mudder17
06-14-2006, 08:51 PM
So I took some pictures this morning and did the best I could with them (you're all right--it's really hard getting toddlers to cooperate!). So she wasn't wearing the dress that DH liked and in fact, the dress she's wearing is backwards because she likes to button buttons, and she didn't really want to hold the letters because she wanted to play with her friend Adelyn (who she kept walking towards), and she didn't want to look at the camera. And I didn't even want to push the pigtails! ;) But I think I'm pretty happy with the final result, although I discovered that the DH/DD picture I reserved for this project a long time ago is not in portrait, so I gave up and just used a picture of me and DD.

Okay, these pics are wonderful, especially because you had to get two boys! That fish face just totally made me lose it and I like the first one with Mason peering through the letter. Kaya did that, but it didn't look nearly as cute. :) The last one with Mason and Aidan together is very sweet!

Wow, those are cool! Where did you get such HUGE letters?! Madeline looks like she's having lots of fun in that first one and so does Jack up high. :)

Bwahahahahaha!!! I love it! The dog is definitely the best. I'd never have success including our pets. Have you ever tried herding 4 cats? ;)

Wow, that came out really well! It has definitely taken me a lot of trial and error to figure out Photoshop, but the best way to learn is to just do it (at least for me). Your DH is definitely going to love this! Jo, you did an awesome job!

Whew! Today has been picture taking and photoshopping day. I have a 4X12 panoramic frame so I kept having to redo to get the size right. x( But, I am very pleased with the end result, now just to get it printed! :-) I took DD to the park after dinner, she was not being cooperative at all about holding the letters. The "y" pic has DD just as she is getting off the slide, hence the top of the head. I was desperate! :-)

Thanks for the compliments, ladies, it's always nice. I posted about my letters above, in response to Lisa - not sure how they showed up much earlier in the thread than my op! Anyways, got them from EBay and they do look great but not sure if I'd use them again -see my pp for reasons :)

I laughed when someone said described my DC as cooperative - NOT! I had to go back three times and it was a struggle to get Maddy to hold the letters at all. Jack was more helpful but got impatient fast. I think I took about 60 pictures to get these...

DH better like this!

Here's DS. I would have liked more variety on the D shots, but I'll take what I can get. It's tough to do this alone, that's for sure. The A is my favourite and I was sure I didn't get it as DS moved so quickly. I also like the Y, I copied someone else and put it in his pants, that was the easiest photo to get as he was running away. Now I just have to buy a frame.

I love them, Eileen!
Years from now it will be nice to look back and say "Remember how she always wanted her dress backwards so she could button it?" The pictures that capture them as they truly are are the best, imo.
They're beautiful pics!

I know, the day he started to walk was the turning point. He's now running all over the place as the last photo shows. I bet I wouldn't recognise Kaya at all. Next time you're visiting your family, maybe we can catch up longer, go the kidspace museum or somewhere else.

Next time I visit, I'll have TWO, LOL! If you look up near the top of this thread, you'll see Kaya as she is now. I was looking at my Daddy pics from last year and I'm amazed at the difference.

She certainly has changed...she's a big girl now and soon a big sister...what fun for her!

Cool! We'll show you a good time in Balto/Wash! :)

Thanks--it is amazing how much she has changed in such a short time. I didn't really notice it at first, and then I gave her bangs and it seemed like she grew up overnight! But her face has definitely changed as well.

Natalie, you're just too sweet.

Open invite to anyone else: If you need help and it is within my ability, I'd be more than happy to Photoshop your Daddy pics. I've been using the program forever so it only takes me minutes, and, (as I said to Natalie), right now I have the time to give back to this board which has given me SO MUCH.

It may be a different story in a couple months when DS is born, then I'm going to just take take take . ;)
