View Full Version : Wheat cat litter?

I know this isn't baby related (unless you consider them fur babies!) but I'm wondering what people think of wheat litter. In my attempt to switch to products that are non toxic and environmentally friendly I realized the litter we use (Tidy Cats) probably isn't the best choice.

For those of you that use wheat litter, do you like it? Does it clump well enough? Does it track all over the place?

Thanks!

I have been using wheat litter since Sept or Oct last. I think it clumps just a well and probably better than clay. The *bits* are a larger so I don't think it tracks as much. I also have an extra litter catching mat to help with that issue (one of the big fake grass type), but in general I don't notice the litter everywhere like I did with clay. And advantage over the clay, the wheat litter you can break up the clumps and flush (haven't tried flushing yet though). The thing that I like the best about the wheat is the smell. I really, really, REALLY think it makes a huge difference on controlling the odor. I'm talking OMG ginormous difference.

I've never even heard of wheat litter! What are the brand names? Did your cats seem to notice the difference?

We tried the wheat litter, but one of our cats is super picky and didn't like it. It's such a great concept though, maybe I should give it another try. We are really having problems with the litter being tracked.

There are a couple different brand names. Sorry I don't remember off hand but you can find it with the regular litter at the pet store. It expands when it gets wet, so you put a lot less in the litter box. As I said above, my picky cat wasn't so keen on it, but it is all our vet uses.

Swheatscoop is the one I see at Petsmart - http://www.swheatscoop.com/

If we switch I think we'll do it gradually (mix more of the old stuff in at first with a little of the wheat and then eventually over to the wheat completely).

There are also corn litters, maybe your cat will go for that.

Swheatscoop is what I have been using. I just switched cold turkey with my cats, and didn't have any issues.

I know what you mean about litter being tracked! It gets all over the place! Maybe I'm noticing it more now that we have Pergo in, before I'm guessing it kind of got trapped into the carpet until I vaccumed it up. All day long I get tiny pieces of litter stuck to my feet - drives me crazy!

It'll be interesting to see if our two cats go for the wheat!

Thanks, and thanks for your review above! I think we're going to give it a try!

We tried it several times with our 4 cats, and one of our cats just flat-out refuses to use it. She has weird bathroom hang-ups! They're all elderly now and set in their ways. When we get kittens again, I am definitely starting them with it.

Not wheat, but we switched to Feline Pine and love it! It doesn't track and it's flushable.

We have the same problem. 4 cats and ones really picky. I'm afraid to switch. But I would if I could.

I didn't try the Swheat Scoop, but I did try Feline Pine. The cats had no problem with it, but I noticed the bag attracted bugs bigtime. We even tried putting it into a sealed container but that didn't seem to help. We went back to Tidy Cats, and have never had that problem since.

We like Swheat Scoop - though it seemed hard to find a little while back. For us, it tracks just as much as clay litter. I also think it smells just as much but that may be due to DH's lack of scooping regularly and my refusal to scoop - I mean, I COULD be pregnant, right? ;)

The one drawback we've noticed had to do with other critters in our house. We had mice a couple of years ago and they seemed attracted to the wheat. (I would find little piles of it near the mouse droppings - ew!) Once our indoor-only cats figured out what to do with the mice, we've been fine. :)

oh - and our kitties are very tolerant of switching things like food and litter so we didn't have any problems there.

I can't remember whether or not we tried the wheat litter...I got SUPER sensitive to the dust in any of the commercial litters and we went on a quest for another type.

We've been using Feline Pine for awhile now and have been quite happy. I periodically find pellets outside the box, but it's not as bad as dust b/c you can just pick them up and throw them away. I find that it's really good on odors. Our litterbox is right in the middle of the hallway between our two bedrooms and the only time it smells is when my male cat takes a particularly stinky poo. I don't think any litter would mask that though! :)

One good thing about it is that it seems to be available most everywhere. We usually buy from our local pet store b/c we like to support them, but I've seen it at Target and at the supermarket.

HTH!

Sorry to revive this old thread, but we just tried the Swheatscoop stuff and it works great for controlling odor, but it sucks at clumping. It just doesn't clump as well as the Arm & Hammer (though IMO, it controls odor a little better) so we ended up with tracked litter a lot. Fortunately, I got a small box on sale as well as a large bag so we're tossing the rest of the small box and returning the large bag.
