well, we made it 8 1/2 months w/o any sickness, but Mia is now offically sick. I'm sure she has a common cold (for now).

She wants no part of the aspirator, accepts the saline drops, is thrilled to be able to "play" w/ her sippy cup to get more fluids, and her her normal happy self. We also have the cold mist humidifer running.

Should I do anything else besides stay nearby w/tissue in hand? I am such a typical 1st time mom :-)

TIA

The first one is so scary! I agree that it sounds like you've got all your bases covered. My DD is in daycare, so she's had a few colds. When she's particularly congested and/or coughing, we'll give her some PediaCare infant drops at bedtime to help her sleep. We also used to put a wedge under one end of her crib, but now she rolls around too much for that and it makes me nervous.

Hope she feels better soon!

Is she on solids yet? I found that pureed homemade chicken/veggie soup worked like a charm with my little guy. But that would depend on where you are with solids, etc. I forget when I started giving him the soup for colds...

I agree with the PP who suggested warm baths - if your DD is amenable to baths, they really help stuffy noses breathe easier.

If she seems happy, you must be doing something right!

You are doing all the right things. Some of the PP's has great suggestions too. Just remember you are probably more miserable about this than she is! :)

I think you're pretty much doing everything you can. Since she won't have the aspirator, I'd let it go unless it's interfering with nursing/bottle. Funny, dd got the cold at the same age! Ran its course in a week. Then I got it, taking me longer :-(.

So...how did it go last night? My DD got her first real cold at 8 months as well (had a minor one at 3 months, but nothing again til 8). I think it really starts now because they start putting everything in their mouths. At least, that's what I found happened with my DD.

Sounds like you are doing everything you can. My only two suggestions are to use a soft, damp washcloth (those thin baby washcloths work great) and Infant Dimetapp or Pediacare if your DC is having trouble sleeping. I found the washcloth much less irritating to her little nose and only used the medication at night or it she was really congested. Seems like the first day isn't so bad, but about days 2-4 we really needed something to help with congestion. Saline drops are great, too because it helps to loosen everything so they can get it out.

I guess here's another thing you can try. My DD really likes to imitate us, so I showed her how to blow air out of her nose since she didn't like the aspirator either. She would do it to imitate me and that would help get the junk out!

Thank you Kim, for inquiring.

Mia did surprising well last night. She did cry more than usual when being put down, but only cried out twice during the night and went back to sleep.

Her cold seems a bit better today, but it is still hanging on. Maybe I will go out and get some pediacare in case it gets worse.

What a great idea about showing her how to blow air out of her nose! I don't know if she will pick up on it, but it is worth a try!!

She is still happy, so I am thankful for that :-)

Thanks again!

DS just had his first cold too. I found one thing that worked for us on Dr. Sears' website. First thing in the morning, and right before bed, I'd take him in the bathroom and steam it up by running the shower on hot. That seemed to help clear out his nose a little better.

Hope Mia feels better soon!

Another great idea! I have a teeny tiny bathroom with a stall shower in it, so that would probably work pretty quickly!

Thanks!

Do you have a vaporizer (or a humidifier, if it's hot where you are)? That can really help with the nasal congestion.

ETA: D'oh! Sorry; it would have helped if I READ the question!!
