By some miracle, I missed having a cold the entire year I nursed last time. Now I'm nursing again, and "nursing" a heck of a cold ;)

Any one know what's safe to take? Or can recommend a site for me to check out? Need drugs. And soon.

Sorry, but I was told when I was nursing (12m exactly) no cold meds -- they dry up milk supply. I have no idea how true this actually is, but its what I did that year. Sigh.

Hopefully, I'm wrong and someone has some ideas for you!

Hope you feel better soon.

Dr. Hale is a good resource. I googled it and can't seem to find his website.

Hopefully Rachels will see this....she will know it.
Also try cross posting in Feeding Forum......good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

my aunt (a LC) told me (and gave me samples of) trimenic cold and cough liquid. I haven't needed to try it but she told me it was the only one that wouldn't decrease milk production. Don't forget to up the water drinking and hope you feel better soon!

Here is a great reference:

http://jhl.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/16/4/319

Quick summary, most antihistamines are safe - see article for list - but they can cause the baby to be drowsy. Decongestant are safe for baby, but can dry up milk. Cough suppressants and expectorants are OK.

What I usually do for a cold is to take the bare minimum of what I need. For example, I will take one Sudafed (half dose) and try to only take it once a day or less if I can stand it. Time doses of antihistamines to minimize exposure - taking it right after last feeding of the evening. As always, drink, drink, drink the water!

Here's some info from Kellymom, which was my fav site while nursing....

http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/cold-remedy.html

FWIW, I wasn't talking so much about the "safety" of the drugs (ie., the effect on the baby), more the decrease in milk supply issue.

HTH & hope you're feeling better soon!

Thanks for all the great info everyone! I tried to respond earlier but was having trouble accessing the board.

I'm going to try a little antihistamine, after all, a drowsy baby isn't really a bad side effect, is it? I AM SO JOKING *dodging flames*

Seriously, I'm happy for the resources. This cold has me on edge and a momma on edge with 2 under 2 is not a good thing!
