I am sure I've told DD (age 4 1/2) not to touch the light bulb under her lampshade because it is hot, but maybe it was a year or so ago, and maybe she forgot? I really thought she knew better by now, but I guess not! I guess curiosity really does get the better of you because now she has blisters on 3 fingertips. So, she's in a lot of pain and won't be able to go swimming for a couple of weeks until it heals. Geez, I thought I'd safety-proofed everything possible in the house. Anyway, just thought I'd share our story to hopefully help someone else. Who knew this would happen?

Oh my goodness! I hope Jada is alright and heals quickly.

I guess we live and learn. But, how in the heck to you child proof a lightbulb? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing you story. I think this is one of those times that we realize we can't put our kids in a plastic bubble and protect them from everything. Don't beat yourself up about it, there is nothing you can have done to avoid it...

Are the bulbs that are energy saving cooler? I know they're not practical for many lamps, but that's the only way I can think of off the top of my head.

Lydia, I hope Jada is okay and heals soon!

Good question!

I should really get some of those anyway since they're probably better for the environment. Not to mention, don't you buy those less frequently as well?

Poor thing. I hope she heals quickly.

If it helps, I remember when I was three, and my mom would tell me not to touch the iron because it was hot. But I just had to touch that iron. And it WAS hot! I guess some things we just have to figure out for ourselves.

When I was about that age, I stuck some butterfly magnets on the (hot) iron. They started to melt, and I burned myself trying to get them off. This was in my grandmother's studio apartment - both my mother and grandmother were right there in the same room! It's amazing how these ideas come into kids' minds, and even if you're right there, something can happen.

Chalk it up to lesson learned - I've never touched the iron again. :)

Thanks for your replies, everyone! DD is feeling much better today. We just put antibiotic cream and band-aids on her fingertips and covered them with a mitten. She's still able to go to camp and play, so it's not too bad. My dad said that fluorescent lightbulbs don't get hot, so maybe I'll look into that. He also told me that he burned his hand as a child, and so did I, so it runs in the family. Great! :)
