my first guess was KOA (kona airport on the big island) but just checked and no...

but looks like a coastal airport.

Definitely an airport on a coast and a bit more. ;-) I wanted to show a bit more of the coast line with this pic so I didn't zoom in very close.

Are the geometric dark spots in the water just part of the photography or are they engineered?

That is part of the photography. The pictures are grafted together, so depending on when each section was photographed the lighting may be different.
