my friend's brother in law lives in montana near a place called "bridger mountain." apparently, the cool outdoorsy people have adopted "bridger" as a boy's name. i think it is pretty cool.
fisher is another idea.

My DS's middle name is Field. It is a family name. Thatcher is a good name, too.

I recently mentioned to a friend's DH that we're expecting a boy in December. He promptly gave me two "awesome" name suggestions... Atlas & Zeus. ;) Not really my style, but thought I'd share. You never know who might love them. :)

How about the name, Rogan?? (The 'Ro' is pronounced
like the word, Row.)
I just heard it recently and I think it sounds awesome.
This name sounds really tough to me.
Edited:
Thought of another name. How about Colter? And, you
could call him Colt.
I saw this name on a yard sign. Colter plays Varsity
football at a local high school here in town. The sign
was in their yard. :)

A friend of mine has a DS named Reed. Not overly popular, yet outdoorsy.

I like the name Wilder. :-) I used to babysit for an adorable outdoorsy little boy named Robert Wilder Lastname and he went by Wilder, it's a family name. I would have named a third boy Wilder but dh wan't nuts about it, and we had a girl. :-)
I would also like to second Jill's suggestion of Atlas, that is VERY cool. Reminds me of someone I knew, a boxer from my grandfather's generation named Teddy Atlas.

Ashley, I just had to laugh at your post (please don't be mad :) ) b/c it reminded me of the new Will Ferrill movie where he plays the race car driver - they named their two sons Walker and Texas Ranger b/c they were such strong names. I think Walker is a cool name too, I just laughed b/c it reminded me of that movie.

Bridger is really cool!! VERY strong and unique - and Bridge would be a cool nick name.
I like Hudson too. Or Tallon, though that's probably kind of trendy now since that Laguna Beach MTV show.

Reid sounds nice to, especially w/ the last name!

OMG!! I havent seen that movie yet. I went to summer camp with a girl named Walker and we know a boy here DS's age with the same name.
Also, on a dorky Conservative note, Reagan's middle name was Wilson (my son's name), and the president-who-shall-not-be-named-on-these-boards' middle name is Walker.

Love the name Walker! Although I have to admit that
I like it better for a girl. (I prefer unisex names for
girls.) I saw a little girl in a magazine named Walker Grace.
Totally cute!

An old co-worker of mine named his son Jace (might be spelled Jayce) Gavin. I like it. How about Cole or Stone.

A lot of the ones that came to mind were already mentioned...
I like Asher, Colton, Holden, Ashton, Archer, Logan, Rogan, Rowan, Harper, etc.
I don't think I saw it mentioned above, but came across this and though it might work...Locke?

I've known two boys named Chance, a boy named Brook, a distant cousin named Breck, and a boy named Shore (their family lives on the beach). Then there's Stone (Phillips) and Rock (Hudson).
Making some up here, but I could see any of these as boy's names: Ridge, Rain, Summit, Storm.
Or Grey/Gray/Grayson, Nash, Gabe, Winston, or Bennet, although I confess none of those are too outdoorsy sounding.
You might look in the book "Beyond Jennifer and Jason..." which is not a traditional name book. It has categories of names, and I think there is probably a nature section.
You might also consider a name from another language or culture that has a nature meaning. "The New Age Baby Name Book" or something close to that title is good for that.
ETA: Thought of three more names: Lake, Cooper, and August.

Someone mentioned "Denver." I would like to second it!
How about Kayden? Irish origin, meaning warrior.
Shane?
Can't wait to hear which name you eventually use!! :)
Edited: Just reread your post and realized that Shane won't go well with your DH's last name. DUH!

Thought of the name Everest, which was a big hit with my DH. It might get confused with Everett, however, but that might be just because I have relatives named Everett. I really liked your name criteria and had fun thinking of options.

Too funny - I thought of that too, but figured I'd be safer with a Will Farrell reference ;)
I never thought of using Walker for a girl, but it's kind of cool. I like unisex names for girls - I think it's really unique. One of my top choices for a girl was Finley, which I'd heard as a boy's name originally.

Wyatt.
Though not sure about it w/last name, but really, that's a hard one, isn't it?
what great name ideas, everyone! thanks so much!
Funny, some of the names already have personal context - we live next town over from Hudson, we used to live on Fletcher pond, my friend's last name is Wilder, guy I used to work with last name was Logan...
I love Rock (Hudson) and Stone (phillips) - I never thought of Rock and Stone as names... they're so cool! and I love ravine, summit, ridge... all those 'places' where DH and I have spent time together.

My son's name is Forrest, and it was number 834 on the social security list in 2004. So not too common, and a great name, IMO (obviously)
How about Marsh? Ash?
Raven?
Wolf?
(Okay, I knew a boy growning up whose name was Raven Wolf Lastname.)
I like PPs suggestion of Stone.
ETA: Anson?
