DH guesses the Himilayas.

BTW, I always show them to DH because I'm horrible at geography.

The blueness of the ice makes me think it could be somewhere in Alaska, but then all that brown has me doubting it. I agree, a mountain range somewhere. Alps?

This is an area with lots of sandstone, so it could very well be mineral deposits that form the color variations. There is not a lot of info on this area.

The Himalayas are a good guess, but this is not Asia and it is a bit warmer here.

I just realized I gave a bad clue. I am always getting this country and one right next to it confused. Anyway, this country went through a brutal civil war during the 1990's.

HOORAY! Yes, it is Algeria. I'm sorry my hints were pretty weak, but there really isn't much to go on. This area is just south of an oasis town called In Salah, which is located in central Algeria.

Wow! This is fun... If you could see us now with our maps and stuff. We thought by your hint we were too South and east, not that the country was south and east. We got confused.

We are now thinking it's Somalia

I figured it would be tough since it is such an unknown area to most of us.
