My mom is a retired kindergarten teacher and can't wait to try all her little activites with Mia. Today she tried out one of her ideas and it was a big hit!! So simple too...

My mom had been saving plastic lids off household items for awhile. She ran them through the dishwasher, put them in a basket and let Mia loose on them. She had a ball!! We knew she would. The colors, the shapes, the special ones with flip lids on them...she explored them all. She had fun stacking them, putting smaller ones in larger ones, rolling them on the floor, etc. Of course they were all pretty big..no little ones. Some examples are lids from: clothes detergent, grated cheese, shampoo, mayonnaise, etc.

I wanted to pass this along b/c it is so fun, easy, cheap, and a great way to recycle!! My mother is already talking about teaching her to sort them by different attributes...hold on Mom! Let her play with them for awhile LOL..

Don't throw out the bottoms either, well the safe ones LOL! DD loves playing with the grated cheese container --- esp. in the bathtub! She also love putting the lids back on their containers (like yogurt tubs and butter tubs.) I never thought of giving her the detergent lids though. Thanks for posting --- I am going to save some more lids!!!

Good idea!

Actually I saved a couple yogurt containers and Mia has been having fun playing with those. I put a piece of veggie booty in there and she loves fishing it out.

I'm going to be on the lookout for more fun "bottoms". DH is going to think I am crazy!!

I never throw any of these type of containers out. Luke loves putting rocks and other items he finds in the yard in them and his pool toys this summer mostly consisted of plastic coffee containers and old detergent containers. He loves pouring from one to another.

Yep, ditto here. Kaya is a container fiend (it can be bottles, bags, sacks, anything that allows you to put things in them). She even likes carrying around our bottles (closed with the safety lid of course) of vitamins or teething pills. Odd thing about those containers--she doesn't want to open them to eat what's inside--she just wants to carry them around.

Oh, and for a great pool toy--I gave her a new sponge and she's been "washing" her plastic chairs (and pouring water on the chair to make a moon or banana shape), herself, my shoes (okay, this one was unintentional, lol), whatever she can get her hands on that can go in the pool. She also loves the watering cans and will fill and pour, fill and pour. Oh, and if you have a sprinkler attachment of some sort, you can attach it to the hose and turn it on low and let her play with it as it slowly fills up the pool.

Sarah loves empty vitamin bottles as well and she doesn't try to get the lid off either! Hmm, never noticed that until you mentioned it, but it is very odd!

Isn't it amazing what these kiddo's prefer to play with!
