I would love some suggestions. DS is asking me everyday to teach him to read. He also understands that he can't read the words on the page and really, really wants to. We read daily to him - during the day, while on the potty, and many books before bedtime - so we get a lot of reading time in.

I don't want to pressure him but since he is asking so much, I thought we could try and see what others might suggest. He knows all of his letter sounds (and letters, too) and has been sounding out some words with the beginning letter.

Also, are there some good (truly) beginner reader sets you might suggest for Christmas.

Thanks for your ideas!

My daughter and I really enjoyed using the book "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" by Siegfried Engelmann, Phyllis Haddox, and Elaine Bruner. Some people think it's kinda weird, but it really works!

I bought mine on Ebay though...Lot better deal!

Check out this site...it is phenomenal. It has tons of fun downloads too. I use it with my 1st graders

I second this book. I am a teacher (4/5 grades) but used it to teach my then 4 year old daughter to read. By the time she entered Kindergarten she read at a second grade level, and at the end of Kindergarten she read at a fifth grade level and has been identified as gifted. Some of the lessons seem kind of slow so we set our own pace. Sometimes doing two or three lessons a day. I bought my copy on Amazon.

I've used 100 Easy Lessons too and another good one is Phonics Pathways. :D

I took the suggestion to get The Electric Company from Netflix and my son LOVES it! I've decided to splurge and get the set. I just want to say this was a great suggestion!
