I had hoped to start parent/baby swim classes with DS this fall, but the class is Sundays 1:15-1:45 - right in the middle of his afternoon nap time. I really don't want to mess with his nap! Do any of you know of any resources (books, websites) that have ideas for water activities to do with babies? We go to the pool some now - he loves the water, and will happily stay in the water till he turns into a little prune.

I don't know any books but I can tell you what we do at the YMCA.

DS on his back, head on my shouler so he can kick
On his belly, under my arm like a football hold so he can kick and scoop the water with his hands
Same position as above but with a toy, you throw the toy a few feet away and try to get him to move his hands and legs to get to the toy
Moving in a circle singing ring a rosy, wheels on the bus etc and moving him up and down in the water
Sitting or standing on the side of the pool and pulling them into the water. DS will jump on his own.
Blast offs - hold onto the side of the pool and put DS's feet up on the wall, same position as a backstroke starting position, push off from the wall and try to get him to push and then kick, turn him over and swim back to the wall.
Lie DS on a kickboard, move him around the pool and try to get him to kick.

You'll have to move his legs and arms for him, but they eventually get the hang of it.

I agree with not messing with the nap. DS used to have meltdowns and I would have to leave early, but then they let me attend an earlier class for older children, it was still mommy and me. His nap time finally changed, so we now go to the proper class for his age.

Have fun in the water. My DS loves swimming.
