I have an American Flag I need to get rid of. It's not torn. Just dirty and we don't use it anymore. I don't want to throw it away in a garbage can. What is the respectful and proper way to dispose of it?

Thanks!

Ironically, you're supposed to burn it.

ETA: link to instructions for flag retirement (googled flag disposal burn or flag retirement)

I'm pretty sure you have to burn it.

Did you try a google search?

Usually you can take it to your local VFW and they will dispose of it properly for you.

VFW can handle it for you. A small donation is customary.

Many boy Scout troops do it, too, at least ones I know of. Agreeing that a small donation is customary, too!

Yeah, the troop my sons are in will take them and then they are destroyed in a special ceremony once a year. You can check with the local boy scout council.

Thanks for the replies! I have this picture of me going out to my front yard and burning my flag. What would the neighbors think? :-)hee hee. I think I'll take it to my local boy scout troup. Thanks again!
