I need to make a resume for a class that i am taking and i need major help. My teacher said to use the resume that is on monster.com but i really do not like it. Does anyone know of a website/book that gives good tips on this topic? I really need help with formatting, what to put on the resume etc. I was hired at my last job because i knew the person previously. I left the job this summer with a glowing letter of reccomendation and was hired at my current job because i knew the person previously so i have never "needed" a resume before but i now do...

Thanks so much!

I am not sure if you are looking for format or content? If you have Microsoft Word there are several templates that give you many different layouts...

I write lots of resumes for lots and people that generally people like and that have an excellent call back rate. I am not plugging my services (because I don't want jobs right now) but if you would like some free advice, pm me.

Word has some nice templates to start with.

As a recruiter ("headhunter") I'd like to chime in with one comment: please leave out the overated "objective statement". I have yet to see a decent one. Mostly they make the applicant look foolish, and since they all say the same thing they shed no light on the applicant.

Agreed - from a former employee of Monster.com! ;) Actually Monster has some good resume writing tips and content - so in addition to Katie you might check there. :)

Good luck!

My last resume revision, I used the samples on Monster. Now, it hasn't gotten me a job ;)... But seriously, I just looked over what they had and took what I liked.

The hardest part for me was making the leap to that brand new resume. I had my DH start it for me...he just wrote down a whole lot of crap and then I edited it.

Honestly, I'm about to take a new job that was offered b/c the person knows me. After that, I'll probably hire someone to help me overhaul my resume for the next one.

I tend to agree. Especially long ones. I will admit that i have a tagline on my resume under my name but that is because in my field, I am always turning in the resume locally and most often on paper and people hirign liked it. But is is not an objective statement. I think it says "Creating order out of chaos, efficient systems development and capacity building for small and large organizations". I think of it as marketing myself.

Katie, that is officially the first original objective statement I've ever seen! And it does tell an employer some important things about you. Well done.
