My DH actually encouraged me to contribute to this board! I've been lurking on and off for a few years now whenever I needed information about a specific problem or product. But recently I've been very drawn in by the BBB. After expressing for the umpteenth time to my DH how much I appreciated the knowledge and perspective of the board he told me I really ought to contribute something. That suggestion felt great to me and I hope to be in a position to be able to reciprocate some ideas some time in the future. My DS just turned three years old this week. In August, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which has proved to be a bit life changing. We also relocated about one hour away from family and friends. The combination of the new location and the amount of time and energy dealing with an illness like diabetes has kept me from meeting anyone IRL and I have really enjoyed the camaraderie of the boards. I look forward to learning and contributing in the near future!

Sincerely
Jen

I am in awe of the parents of kids with Type 1 diabetes. Just observing the time and energy that demands makes me exhausted. I don't remember ever seeing that mentioned on the boards, so you may be serving as a resource here sooner than you realize! Welcome, we're glad to have you!

Glad you've found a place to "talk." I just have to say - it takes an unbelievable amount of energy to have a child that young with diabetes - I am always amazed by the parents. Toddlers are notoriously poor, picky, and inconsistent eaters and they love those carbs and sugar. I hope you are taking care of yourself through thi difficult adjustment. For what its worth, from what I observed working in a children's hospital, it's never fun, but once kids hit about first grade they at least "get it" a bit and eat more consistently if reluctantly.

Thanks Katie! I don't think I've heard anyone mention Type 1 diabetes either. This was one of the reasons I thought that I might "come clean" and introduce myself in case I can be a resource to anyone in the very difficult time of a first diagnosis. I hope that something that I've been through can be useful to someone. :) As to the energy/exhaustion thing I think its just starting to set in but I certainly feel the need to connect and unwind and that's why this board is so perfect!

Wow. Thank you for the encouragement. It sounds like you have a lot of knowledge about kids with Type 1. It's good to know that things do get easier. Hearing things like that makes it seem less overwhelming. I could go on and on about toddler mealtimes and I think a lot of people on this board could probably relate to many of the issues. Add the carb counting and insulin shots and its just plain no fun! Luckily my DS is a champ and never complains when we have to prick his finger or actually give the shots.

Hello Jen
Glad to meet/see you here in the BBB. I was like you and DH also encouraged me to post. I think he knew how hungry I was for some adult conversation not to mention support. There are a lot of really wise women here with a wealth of knowledge I'm sure your experiences are going to be a great help to many. On a lighter note, there are also a lot of "wise-guys" I mean gals here, too...they'll brighten your most stressful days.:D

See you around!

Welcome to the boards!

Just some info, I have a cousin (now 37) who was diagnosed with Diabetes at a very early age (I want to say 18 mos) and he has lived a very full life, now a dad to 4 kids. I have some vague recollection that he spent a summer at camp for kids with diabetes where he learned how to manage his care and disease himself. Clearly your son is a bit young for that, but something to keep in the back of your mind.

Welcome Jen.... My Cousin's DD has type 1 Diabetes and was diagnosed around age 3. It completely changed their family lifestyle but they are all doing wonderfully now. Glad you are here and look forward to your posts.

Jen,

I'm coming to this late--I haven't been on the boards for a few days.

I just wanted to let you know, as someone with Type I diabetes who was diagnosed at 4, it's probably hard to believe now, but when your son is older you're going to be glad that he was so young when he got it. I think it's much easier to have no memories of life before getting diabetes, personally. In the long run, that makes it easier to live with. I can't imagine how hard it would be to get as a teenager.

Good luck! And btw, where do you live?

Sheila

Just wanted to say welcome!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your DS's diagnosis, but I'm sure he's in wonderful hands with a mama like you by his side :)

Looking forward to getting to know you better here at the boards.

Hi Sheila. Thank you for the welcome. I, too, think that it is a good thing that he was diagnosed young... he's not hung up about it at all. In fact, I think he barely recognizes that his routine has changed and that is such a blessing. He is an absolute champ about getting tested and having his shots and its nice that he doesn't have any psychological hangups at this age. :) We've located from one area to another here in southern california and we're about an hour away from family and friends so its a little tough :(

Sorry to hear you're not closer to family. I know how hard that is--I moved from Oregon to Ohio, and all of my family is still in Oregon.

If your son hardly notices the change in his routine, that means you're doing a great job! I was lucky enough to have a mother who was a pediatric nurse, but it was even hard for her when it was her own child.

Keep up the great work!
