View Full Version : a little nervous

ok, so when there is a smallish lump in one breast, and that whole side is painful, its usually some kind of fibrous something or other, right ?? I am getting it checked out - had a screening mammogram 10 days ago, and then they called back and said that because I had indicated that I felt a lump, they should do a diagnostic one and an ultrasound, and I go on wednesday - and I didn't realize that I was nervous, but it is really pretty achey right now, and so of course I have been googling breast - lump - pain. (a great way to spend a saturday night, by the way). I have had two fibrosomething or others removed from the other side, but that was eons ago (like 15 years) so I don't remember if its the same thing. I told DH I was a little nervous, but also that it is probably nothing. So I don't know why I am even posting this, maybe just hoping for some good BBB mojo or something. And the fact that I am sick too is probably making me a little more worried, cause I feel generally lousy too. so I guess any good vibes or info or advice would be appreciated.

Lynnie-

Two questions - are you still nursing and/or do you consume a lot of caffeine? Both could contribute to fiberous cysts.

Also, it could depend on where you are in your cycle.

Big hugs to you. Please keep us posted!

Until then - STOP GOOGLING!

Lynnie I hope this is nothing too serious. Whatever you do quit searching stuff on the internet. Close those other web browser windows right now. Ha Ha! ;-) That will make you crazy with worry.

I'm sending you a special prayer tonight. For healing, strength, and rest. You probably won't find out the results for a few more days until then please just rest as much as possible. Big ((HUG)) hang in there hon! Please take care of yourself. I think taking Advil may help the achey feeling it's also an anti-inflamitory. Please eat well during the next few days too. If you like Thai food, go eat some Tom Yum Gai (spicy chicken soup). This soup is wonderful and healing. Well at least eat some chicken soup.

Sending you healing thoughts. And praying for good test results. ;-)

I am going through something very similar. Marisa's post is right on. My Dr told me the same thing basically. I go back in a few weeks. I am off the caffeine, took motrin for the inflamation and discomfort and the Dr wanted to see me after I had a period. He told me my breasts are very fibrous. Apparently my mother is the same.

Anyway, hang in there.

No more googling! I had a lump than was sore that I was almost positive was nothing. I went to the doctor to have it checked out and she wanted to send me for diagnostic stuff. I'm sure you really don't care to know this, but evidently I have lumpy breasts. I've had diagnostic mammograms and sonograms before and everything was fine. Even still, knowing that I was going to get one b/c of a lump and breast pain, I was a little freaked out. It was nothing. Sending good vibes your way! And remember, no more googling.

I was in the same spot you were earlier this year. Found a lump, it was sore, went to the doc, sent for mammogram and ultrasound. Totally freaked me out -- tons of thanks to the great ladies on this board who helped me out. Turns out I too have lumpy breasts (in addition to being huge) and that it was nothing. The woman who did the mammogram actually found 2 other lumps (same thing) that I hadn't found myself. I do have a follow-up mammogram in November to make sure everything is fine, but I'm totally not worried.

No more googling tho -- you'll drive yourself insane!!

Thinking of you!

My mom has really fibroidcystic breasts. Ditto to the PPs that caffeine, hormone fluctuations, etc. can affect how lumpy they are. My mom has dealt w/ several suspicious lumps, and has had multiple ultrasounds, a few aspirations, and even had to do one biopsy. Fortunately (knock on wood) they've all been fibroids to date. Every time she has to get a mammogram we dread it for her, because if anything suspicious shows up, it creates a lot of stress. At this point she knows it is most likely a cyst when it happens, but when you are going through it, it is difficult to put your mind at ease.

I think if you already had fibroid cysts removed, there's a good chance that's what you are dealing w/ again since some women are just more prone to cysts in general.

Getting it checked out is obviously very smart. The constant "checking" can also make it even more sore, which I'm sure isn't helping it feel any better, although I know I'd be poking around too.

Good BBB mojo coming your way, and hopefully your mind will be put at ease soon.

Good for you for checking it out. You'll be in my thoughts this week.

You wanted to send you some good vibes. I too have painful breasts. Not lumpy just hurty and especially at certain times of my cycle. I think it gets worse with age (not implying that you are old, just something to think about). Anyway I also wanted to say be careful of chocolate also! I know doesn't it stink - no caffein and on top of that no chocolate to relieve the anxiety. My gyn tells me to lay of the choco for two weeks before my mammo and ultrasounds. She is right, it makes thing more comfortable. I am not a caffein consumer in other things like soda or coffee, but boy do I like my chocolate when I am stressed.

Good luck and really stay off of the internet. Bad internet, bad!

Sending lots of good vibes and support. Some of the PPs mentioned it could be fibrous cysts - I too had issues with that several years ago and I was told to cut down on the caffeine. That seemed to clear everything up. Hoping it's just that and nothing more but it's great that you are getting it checked out now.

Keep us posted.

thanks everyone. The googling actually was not a bad thing - most hits had to do with the fibrocystic thing, but I did stop, and hearing so many other people say they have had the same thing, which turned out to be basically nothing, is very reassuring. And the hugs were the greatest ! :)

I am not nursing, but I do drink a cafe con leche a day. And, well, chocolate is a way of life for me (at least a little, or knowing that it is there, and I can eat it if I want to). I don't think I take that much caffeine, though, but who knows. And, I don't know where I am in my cycle, because I have the mirena thing, so haven't had my period since all the initial bleeding stopped, probably around 2 years ago. I think I'll ask them if the mirena is a risk factor, if so, I will get it removed. (then maybe I'll get my little girl "by accident...") Oh, and I AM old, so no offense taken Jeannine !

But thanks to you all, I had some delicious tom kar gai on sunday(and pad thai to boot) - great idea, Nancy) and went shopping yesterday to relax and help my flu/sinus infection totally clearn up (I had the day off and the kids had school!). Tomorrow I will go in for the tests. I am so glad that everyone else's scare worked out alright, and hopefully I'll be re-joining the lumpy breast club. I'll keep you all posted, and thanks again for all the good vibes. What a great thing to read first thing in the AM at work.

If it makes you feel better at all, My mom had breast cancer and between when it was biopsied and diagnosed as cancer but before her mastectomy surgery, she let me feel it. She said it didn't hurt her at all. It never bothered her. My grandmother had cancer too and used to say the same thing. So, most likely your's isnt cancer.

I can tell you what it felt like. It was like a tough, squishy knot- it wasn't rock hard, but it wasn't a soft squishy lump. Not sure that helps. I can't really think of anything to compare it too.

I'm praying for you. I know how scary it is. Best of luck. And make sure you let us know the results ASAP.

Hi there,
I just wanted you to know I had a very similar situation in 2003. I had a painful lump in my right breast. Had a mammogram and the results were inconclusive because I had "dense breast tissue." I was sent for a diagnostic ultrasound, and immediately referred to a breast specialist/surgeon. He said that from the mammo/ultrasound report, it didn't look malignant, but he wanted to do a needle biopsy to be sure. It turned out to be a fibroadenoma (non-cancerous mass). I had it surgically removed with no complications and you can barely see the scar. I had no problem breastfeeding my daughter a year later.

My doctor said that most times, when the lump is painful, it isn't cancer. It sounds like you might have a fibradenoma. It's definitely scary to find a lump, and I hope you get some answers soon!

Take care, and many positive thoughts coming your way
