*sigh*

DD's been on this big kick of wanting to stand, and hates it when I hold onto her: she twists and turns to get away, but in the process loses her balance and falls in a weird contorted way. Well, this morning we were playing with blocks (her favorite toy), and was standing next to them. SHe wiggled, and ended up falling vace-down (really, a face plant) onto a triangle block (they're actually shape-sorters, with the ridges so that babies can grab them...)

So, now DD has a line-bruise from the bridge of her nose down to her cheek, next to her mouth. Is there anything I can do to diminish the look of it?

With her birthmark (on her forehead that looks like a bruise), I won't be able to leave the house, for fear that someone will try and report me to DCF for child abuse :(

OK, she woke up from her nap, so here's a pic :)

After 3 boys facial bruises are a common thing. There is really nothing to do about it. IF they let you hold something cool on it but none of mine would ever let me do that. My oldest had a bruise on his forhead for EVERY picture from 1yr to 4yrs. I kid you not. Babies fall... unfortunately it wont be her last. This summer Nathans legs looked tan from all the bruises and I honestly dont know how he did them.
Hugs but no one will think you beat your child HONEST.

The first one's always the hardest! It's hard to see the little one you've been able to protect get hurt.

BION, the bruises are actually a good thing(w/in reason!). They mean Taryn's moving around and being active. I was surprised when DD's doc was "pleased" that she had bruises on her legs at her 1st year appt. I was stressed he'd think we were beating her. He was very understanding.

Try not to worry about what others think. If they have any kid knowledge, they'll completely understand.

Too bad it didn't happen a couple of weeks later for Halloween--you could have drawn stitch marks on it! Sorry--just kidding. It pretty much comes with the territory at her age. I'm sure it will be gone in a couple of days, and honestly, it doesn't look like child-abuse. :)

thanks. I know I shouldn't be THAT worried about it, and I'm really not, except that it just looks so sad! DH (who is always hurting himself) says that the majority of it will fade by tomorrow, but the purple part next to her mouth might last (since it's pretty purple-y)

Sorry your little one got hurt. :(

Get yourself to Whole Foods (or something similar) and buy Arnica. It comes in gel, cream or tablet. Ypu can also order it online. I would get the gel or cream. Apply it to the bruise. bump It helps so much!!! I have a couple of tubes on hand because it seems like my little guy is always falling on something!

i am so sorry your little one got hurt. Ds is always falling. I have gotten use to it at this point. I remember his first fall like it was just now. I know it is hard to think about but they do fade pretty fast. Good luck. Your dd is a cutie

I second the rec for Arnica.

DS pulled his dresser onto himself about a year ago. He had a huge goose egg on his head. I put Arnica on it and the next day it was GONE.

That first big bruise always hurts Mama most doesn't it?
I did want to say, I read you title and opened the post and looked at your pic first. I did't even really notice the longer line bruise at first but her birthmark and thought, "Wow, that bruise really looks like a birthmark." So, not everyone will think multiple bruises. I have a friend who's DS has dark brownish (looks like fading bruises) birthmarks on his tush and she carries a doctors note saying it's a birthmark just in case. Sorry she hurt herself, but it is a good sign for wanting to hit the next developmental stage.

Oh my! Poor Taryn! I wouldn't worry about not going out, people understand that little ones get hurt! It is so hard when they tumble, but it is great that she is doing so well. Such a cutie you have there mama!!

hi,

so sorry your cutie has discovered the joy of running head first into things. my ds is a pro! a friend in my mom's group turned me onto the arnica as well. i tried it on myself first, as i bruise really easily as well - it's amazing stuff - i have to admit, i was pretty doubtful at first. it definitely speeds up the re-absorption process. my bruises usually take a week or more to loose the dark purple color and turn to green then yellow then disappear. with the arnica, they're usually turning by the second day and gone by the third or by the fourth for a really deep/dark one. my WF sells the Boiron brand. i've had better luck with the gel than the ointment, only b/c the gel absorbs pretty quickly, so he doesn't play with it, whereas the ointment stays a little sticky and he keeps sticking his fingers in it. i love the stuff so much, i even keep the smallest size in the diaper bag, in addition to one at home, and one at my parents place (we're there 3-4x/wk).

hth, and what a doll,
lori
