View Full Version : OT: How old is the newest car in your household?

ett
10-10-2006, 08:21 PM
I was listening to an advertisement on the radio yesterday and they said that the average age for a car in the US was 3.1 years old. That seems pretty new to me since our 2 cars are 5 years old and 9 years old. So just wondering how old are cars that others are driving.

We bought a new Honda in 1999 with every intention of keeping it a long time- isn't that why one buys a Honda? :) I'm all for having no car payment!

I would believe that many people get new cars sooner. I think a lot of people lease or just trade in.

Sure, sometimes I wish I had a newer car but this one works. We will be keeping it for the forseeable future- knock on wood that nothing bad happens to it!!

We generally keep our cars at least 5 years. Right now our cars are 2 and 3 years old.

Well, we have one car that's 2 years old and one car that's 6 years old. We have every intention of driving them into the ground. The 2 year old car replaced a 7 year old Ford Escort wagon that was used when we bought it and had problems from day 21 (the place we bought it from had a 20 day satisfaction guarantee of course). After four years of repairing this, that, or the other thing, (in our case Ford really did stand for Fix Or Repair Daily) it was finally going to cost more to repair than it was worth, so with a baby on the way we went with the ultimate soccer-mom Subaru Outback wagon. It was my very first actual new car, and it should hopefully last us many, many years.

To be honest, I do envy my cousin her roomy mini-van, but I don't foresee us getting one of those unless we have more than 2 children.

I drive a 2001 Toyota Camry (love, love, LOVE it....except it's one year too soon to have LATCH :( ) DH drives a 2003 Ford Explorer (High payment, ick; low gas mileage, double ick).

I just got the Toyota a few months ago to replace my '99 Chevy Malibu which I hated. I will drive it forever and ever - and from what I've heard about Camrys, it will last at least that long. :)

Our current vehicles are:
04 Toyota Sienna we bought when the twins were born.
DH's car which he bought in 2001 after years of saving.

Previously we owned:
88 Toyota Camry which we sold to a friend in 2001...he's still driving it...we loved that car.
89 VW Golf which we sold to a another friend in 2000 so I could get a...
00 Toyota Camry which we then traded for the Sienna Van.

I suppose the advertisement is right. In fact I would like to get a new van (Sienna) so I can get the camera in the back...I'm so nervous when backing out...I go very slow and look out my window to be certain I'm not hitting anyone or anything.

We have two cars -- a '96 and a '97. We don't plan to get replacements until these die. The '96 is currently on DNR status, so it's probably only a matter of time before we're within the "average."

Funny, we average out to be about 3 years.

DH drives an 01 Ram 1500 (nothing but problems from the day it went out of warranty!)

I drive an 05 CRV (had a 2000 Accord 2 door that we replaced when we had DS. I LOVED that car though and would still be driving it if it was a 4 door. NEVER had a problem!)

I am an old car junkie--run it till it dies and becomes too expensive to run. I did trade in my Saturn station wagon for a Subaru when I was pg with DS--so it was only 2 yrs old. DH is amazed that all of the nurses with whom he works have nicer cars than we do--it really is a matter of priorities. And new cars are not a priority for us. Although I may break the rule again in a couple of years and trade in the Subaru for a mini van. Oh well, at least we only buy used:-)

Our oldest car is a 2001. We also have a 2004. But I should say that we replaced cars that were 17 and 11 years old. We're hoping to keep those cars forever (as in 15-20 years) unless we have a lot of kids.

We just got a 2007 Accord three weeks ago! I am really excited about it. I was driving a 96 Chevy, but I broke down three times in the last year. It just got too unreliable and expensive to maintain.

DH drives a 2000 Toyota Tacoma that he bought used in 2004. Before that, he had an 87 Camry. It was at 225K miles and he swears it'd still be going strong if someone hadn't totalled it for him.

We have a 98 and an 02. i am hoping to get a van to replace my sedan in 08. So far the car has held up pretty well. I've probably poured another car's worth of repairs into it over the years though.

We have an 03 VW Passat wagon, which is the first new car either one of us has ever bought.

I drive a 2000 Subaru, which was purchased a year ago to replace a 93 Mazda.

We plan to drive both of these cars until they die, hopefully a decade or more on the VW, and at least 5 years on the Subaru.

Within the last 7 months DH and I have bought cars made in 95 and 96 - when we moved to the US it was what we could afford. They are the 3rd and 4th cars we've bought in the last 5 years as we have moved country twice and could not take the cars with us. It gets really expensive! (Not that I'm complaining - I love seeing different parts of the world.)

We usually keep a car until it gets too expensive to maintain and has excessive mileage. Although that said, my dad had his 1975 GMC truck (which had several complete odometer turn overs) up until just a couple years ago, so one person's concept of old or excessive mileage may vary! ;)

We just bought a new van because DHs commute car was starting to have the once a month maintanence blues (and we needed a bigger car). So our current three are less than a month old, 4 years old and 9 years old. I know a lot of people that lease cars vs. buy them, so they always tend to have newer cars. Perhaps the ad you heard took leased cars into consideration which would alter the average?

Dh drives a 2004 Jeep Cherokee. I drove a 2002 Honda Civic up until a few months ago, now I have a new CR-V.

We both loved our cars and would have driven them into the ground but I needed more room with the new baby, hence the CR-V (which I don't even think gives me *that* much more room, but anyway). Dh will probably keep the Jeep until the wheels fall off.

We have a 97 and a 2001. We're actually about to sell the 01 to get a newer car (probably a used 04 or 05), because it is just too small. It was my Mary Tyler Moore single girl cute car. That I bought about, oh, eight minutes before DH and I started dating. D'oh!

It is *killing* me to get rid of a perfectly mechanically sound vehicle. I come from a long line of people who drive cars until they die a spectacular death on the side of the road.

That's so funny - I joke that DH will end up like Fred Flinstone in his '98 Jeep Wrangler. I swear he's going to drive it until there's nothing left but a seat and a steering wheel. It's got 140,000+ miles on it and is still going strong.

Our van is an '01 with low mileage that was bought in '05. I traded (just about even) for my higher mileage '01 Ford Escape when we needed more room after DD #2 was born. I really miss the Escape but there was just not enough room for a RF carseat behind the passenger seat. DH is tall with long legs and I ended up having to drive all the time b/c he didn't fit in the passenger seat.

Ours are 6 (almost 7) and 12 years old. Our dilemma will come in a few years. The 12 year old is my first car - a Honda Civic. Two door, stick shift - NOT intended as a Mommy car. I even remember thinking when I got it "This will be my last two door." It has dents, recently had the CD player stolen, so now the dash is destroyed, and has power nothing. Yet, it still runs great. I love Honda. It actually runs better than the 7 year old Nissan Altima - and the milage is not that far apart. The Honda has 100K and the Nissan has 90K. We'll keep the cars as long as repairs aren't too crazy or we have another child. At that point we'll probably get an Odyssey. I'm sure we'll trade in the Honda since we really need four doors, but it's hard to do when it just seems like the Honda would outlast the Nissan no matter what we would do to it. I must say, I love having no car payments and the idea that the Nissan may die before the Odyssey would be paid off makes me crazed - thus the car dilemma. I occasionally think we should trade in the Altima for a used Accord now, try to pay that off asap, then get a new Odyssey (and trade in the Nissan) after that car is paid off. Then I think about how much I love having no car payment and I say "forget it. We'll deal with it when something dies or there's no more room."

Our newest car is very new, simply because we finally decided we needed a minivan. The kids are older, it's hard to squeeze in between their car seats in the back seat when we go places with Grandma, and we began carpooling this past summer.

We only have 1 car, and we plan to keep it that way. It's a 2003 Subaru Outback. It replaced a 10-year old Honda and 8-year old Neon.

If we have another child, we might give in and buy a van, but I really am dreaming of a hybrid van so not sure if that will be a reality.

I might win the award for oldest car here - we drive a 1988 VW Jetta with over 200,000 miles on it. It has been ridiculously dependable, though we did recently put $400 into in for a few issues in order to get it to pass inspection. I considered it money well spent since we hadn't had any other repairs in almost 2 years. It is currently on DNR, though, so we'll likely be replacing it in the next year with a gently used vehicle. We'll probably buy a 1 year old vehicle still under warranty.

Our other car is a 2001 that we fully intended to drive for 10 years or more. It is still under warranty, but has had a lot of isues lately that make me think we may replace it sooner than that. We didn't have kids when we bought it and didn't consider things like ease of installation of carseats.

DH drives a 1996 Camry with about 213,000 miles on it, and he continues to put on at least another 90 miles daily. Like a few others here, he wants to drive it until the vehicle blows up. The annoying thing is that this car is more reliable than my 2002 VW Passat. x( We can't decide if we're going to replace the Passat or the Camry next. It seems like DH's car would be the obvious choice, but my car is so unreliable -- and it's the one DS is in most of the time -- that we're going to have a car buying dilemma soon, too!

Cars are a huge investment, and a very poor one. We buy new or good used, and drive 'em 'til the drop. With two college kids to keep mobile, too, we can't afford a bunch of car payments.

Mine is 6 years old, it's a 2000 Infiniti but we got it at the end of '01 as a leftover. Has 40K miles on it now (I work near home and most of our road trips tend to be w/ FIL). DH has an '05 GTO. When we replace a car it'll be mine; he's dead set again a minivan but for some reason I want one even though we only have one DS. I love the room, power doors, being able to pile in faster in the rain, etc!

Oh, we also have a '58 Chevy and a '70 Pontiac LeMans.

Mine is a '04 Acura and my DH's is a '94 Jeep Cherokee. We are in the process of selling his and getting him a new one. I guess he deserves it since he has had the Jeep since high school. :)

We are "drive them till they stop working" people, so I suspect the Acura and the future new car will be with us for a long while.

My car was 7 when we sold it this summer. DH's car is 5. We went from an average age of 6 to 2.5 when we replaced my car.

As long as my dad keeps working for GM, we'll probably buy new-- replace DH's car in 3-4 years.

DH has never kept a new vehicle for a full year. I actually think his record is 11 months.

He couldn't believe that I was driving a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire when we met (in 2004). So right after we got married, he got me a 2005 GMC Yukon. He has a 2005 Chevy Silverado.

I made him promise that these would last at least until 2007, lol. Of course, he can trade the truck in whenever he wants, but I love my Yukon, so it's not going anywhere until the wheels fall off!

Well, we have a 2004 Honda Accord and a 2000 Civic Si. The Si is a 2 door so DH says we need to get another new car. I would love to just drive it for a few more years...but he says it would be impossible with 2 in seats....

DH is a PITA with cars- since we've been married (not even 3 1/2 years) we've had 8 between us- some were company cars from where DH used to work, others were traded in for one reason or another- though in DH's defense, the 2003 Volvo S60 we just traded in was a HUGE lemon.

So, as of two weeks ago, we are a 2 BMW family- an 04 X5 (mine) that I intend to drive into the ground, and a new 06 325 that surely he will trade in a few years.

And I totally agree, cars are horrible investments, if you can even call them that!

My CRV will be 3 years old next April...bought it shortly after DS was born since getting the carseat in/out of a 2-door just wasn't fun.....that car was a Civic which was 6 years old when it was traded in and before that my Civic hatchback was 7 years old. The CRV will be with us for awhile!

DH's acura is 8 1/2 years old....we plan on getting him a new Acura for his birthday in May as my CRV will be paid off in April.

yes....we're a Honda family!

Ours are both from 2001. I hate car payments so we'll probably be keeping them for awhile.

This is great to see that people are keeping their cars around. DH drives one of the oldest cars at work, the guys that work for him drive nicer cars. It makes him feel bad sometimes. Oh well....

Our current inventory:

97 Ford Explorer - back up to Miata
99 Mazda Miata - DH's commuter car
06 Ford Expediton - sits in the drive, I don't go out much, usually used on weekends.

I loved having no car payments!! But at least we only have one, its huge though..

1998 Toyota Corolla purchased used in 2001. No debt. Runs perfectly. Cheap to maintain. Never done anything to the car except wear and tear items like tires and brakes and basic tune-ups. It is not going anywhere until it dies or we have 2 more kids. It has about 130,000 miles on it.

Sold my 95 Camry Coupe this March because it bacame way unpractical having to get DD in and out of her carseat with a 2-door car. Otherwise I would have driven that car to the ground. Got a new Highlander - will probably drive it to the ground :)

I thought we were in the running for oldest until I saw yours. We have a '92 Yukon that my SIL is currently driving (it's a two-door so we switched their minivan for our Yukon while DS is still in a carseat.) We plan to keep the Yukon in the family until it drops, it's 4-wheel drive and can tow up to 7000lbs. We've replaced almost everything except the engine block in that car at least once and it's still our sentimental favorite. It's due for smog this coming Jan, hopefully it will pass since we took measures to get is smog-ready.

Our daily cars are the 99 minivan and 99 'burb. Our tow vehicle is a 2001 silverado that can pull our 8000lb travel trailer.

Can't wait to get rid of those car payments.

My DH and I both drive cars that are '94s. We are first time parents to be and were worried about driving older cars with the baby, but neither one of us can stomach those car payments. Since they both still drive and have good gas mileage, we just can't justify it. We'll be driving them into the ground. Hopefully that'll take a while.

Well, currently they are 2004 Toyota Camry and 2005 Pontiac Vibe.

The Vibe was replacing a 12 year old Geo Storm, and the Camry was replacing a 5 year old Camry that was totalled when I got into an accident. I had a Corolla that was 10 years old before I got the older Camry that I intended to keep for 10-12 years. We do intend to keep these cars for at least 10 years if not longer.
