Hi all: Dear hubby just accepted a fellowship position in Clearwater, FL and we'll be there for at least 1 year, starting mid-June of next year. We don't know anything about that area so if anyone is from that area or knows anything about it (ie where to rent, where NOT to live, good churches, etc, good places for young kiddies), please let me know. TIA! :)

My hubby grew up there. I will ask him tonight and let you know. Will you need schools?

We won't be needing schools b/c my oldest is only 2. Thanks, though!

Isn't Clearwater where the big Scientology Center is? If anyone asks you to take a free personality test, run.

DH says Safety Harbor, Odessa, West chase ( a little bit of a drive) He says you dont want to live in Clearwater itself. Stay away from the circle around St Pete. Tarpon Springs is very nice. He thinks downtown Tarpon Springs is very nice and you should be able to get an apt in any of these places. No info for kids though. He was 9 when they moved there.
I know during the fall you can see the dolphins at the beach and its always fun to see the manatees. There's tons to do around there esp with day trips.

Thanks a bunch for the insider's info! :) Now we have a starting point in looking for housing.

It's a beautiful area, but yes, that's where one of the Scientology Centers is and it's hard to walk anywhere without seeing them on the streets. But in the several times we've been there, we've never been approached by a Scientologist, so maybe I just exude a "keep away" vibe to them? :P

Tarpon Springs IS very nice. What about Dunedin? That's where DH's aunt/uncle and grandmother live. Or is that too much of a retirement community? I really like what I've seen of it, though. There's a nice bike trail that goes through there as well. I also recall some nice community centers, parks, and so forth.
