View Full Version : Talk to me about taking formal photos -- DD is scared!

We tried to take DD for her 2year photos in April (at Sears) and she was terrified. She had previously been for 6m, 12m & 18m photos + 2 sets of Christmas photos, with no problems. The only photos that were a problem were her passport photos at 2m, but that was a long time ago. She's never had a problem with our "home" photos (and she quite likes looking at herself on the digital camera display or on the tv). We've since tried to take her back there for photos and she starts to scream. She had a major melt-down when she went for new passport photos last month (different place).

We have no idea what triggered this, but I really want some photos of her! Sears is pretty much our only option for "studio" photos at a reasonable price (other than custom photo studios or Walmart).

Any ideas????

Hmmm...she'll grow out of it and maybe you want to skip this time out (I bet you could take some great pics yourself...and remember that non posed pictures of little ones can be the very best! They really capture the spirit of the child. Even if it doesn't look "formal" doesn't mean you or others won't cherish it later :)).?

Or bribery could work if you are down with that. :)

We basically had to give up studio pics from around 18-30 months. 30 months was a horrible ordeal that I never, ever want to repeat.

We had one great experience at Sears. It was in September so they were dead. The staff was in the store trying to recruit customers and had amazing deals. I decided to try and knew I didn't have to buy anything (sitting was free too). Well, because it was so slow that day they had 3-4 staff members working with us. One changed the backgrounds/ props. one posed ds, one tried to get ds to smile and one took all the pictures. It was really quick and so easy! If I could guarantee that I would do it with a fussy toddler. Maybe your store has really off hours where you could get that kind of attention? Schedule early and ask about that on the phone.

Id try it. Are you going to be in the pictures also? Sometimes that helps. Make a big deal about you both being in the pictures and how you can do something special afterwards. After you get one together see if she will pick a prop. Nathan isnt the easiest to get picturs of but I found if he is with his me or his brothers. Here is our pics from earlier this month ( their bdays are 11/18, 10/30 & 11/15) <inserting shameless brag>

I have no professional pictures since last christmas of Nathan. It was a phase he went through that he didnt want to but he snapped out of it for this session. FYI I really like our sears

Melissa.. have you considered not taking the studio route for photos?

If she's scared I suggest going with a candid natural shot. The best thing to do is ask around for a photographer to come to your house or meet at a park etc.. have them walk around and get to know your DD for a few minutes then start clicking away as she's playing or your family is sitting etc...

If you pick a nature setting for a backdrop outdoors and just let her play or be herself you'll probably get some excellent pics. I'm sure you can find a good photographer to do this for you. Just start asking around.
