View Full Version : Silly grammar (or is it etiquette?) question

OK, so I'm trying to figure out how to "sign" our photo Christmas cards. This is the first year I've ordered cards from a site with templates, so I don't have a lot of control over the way the text appears, but that's a different gripe all together. ;)

Anyway, which person's name should come first? I typed it up "Love, Sarah, DH & DD", but then I was wondering if DH's name should come first, or since the pictures are all of DD if her name should come first? Also, I think it looks a little awkward with the comma after the word Love, but a colon or dash looks equally as awkward.

Like a said, it's a really silly question. I'm certain most of the people receiving these cards aren't going to care what it says, but I'd hate to offend the people who might care.

You don't need anything after Love. Go straight to the first name. I usually go with DH and myself first, and then DD. Sometimes I put DH first sometimes I put my name first, kind of depends on my mood. I wouldn't worry about offending people. That card is so sweet that if all someone can notice is the order of names, they've got bigger issues.

I agree with PP. For whatever reason I always list us by oldest to youngest (DH, me, DS)

I was wondering where you are ordering our cards from. I like the multiple-photo layout.

Those pics are precious!!

As for your question, "proper" etiquette says the woman's name goes first, then the man, then children older to younger.

I've seen it done other ways too, though, and most people don't notice or care. I'm a stickler(though becoming less so by the minute) for grammar/etiquette but most aren't. Just please don't put "the smith's" on your return labels. :P It should be "the smiths".

I suppose that's a good way to look at it! :)

Thanks!

I'm getting them from the Kodak Gallery (http://www.kodakgallery.com/) They have several different designs, and most of them have multiple layouts ranging from 1 to 4 pictures in various orientations. I had a really hard time choosing one!

Thanks! That's what I thought I remembered about the order, but I wasn't sure. Don't worry about the return labels, we use "The Smith Family" format, since our last name looks really odd pluralized. (It ends in 'y'.)

What beautiful pics! :) On my cards I will put Love, DH, me, and DD or sometimes put my name first. HTH -Sarah

>please don't put "the smith's" on your return labels. :P It
>should be "the smiths".

This is absolutely my biggest pet peeve! Unnecessary apostrophes!Especially when pluralizing words: *CD's* or *video's* like this. In the big scheme of things I know it's not a big deal but it bugs me.

There should be a comma after Denis too.

That card is beautiful! We've always gone with Snapfish, but I think I need to check out Kodak this year.

I agree with PP that the woman's name goes first, then DH, then oldest to youngest child(ren). Not only is it the whole proper "ladies and gentlemen" thing, but I figure I'm doing all the work picking out the cards, ordering them, and sending them- my name is going first!!!

Happy Holidays!

True, true! I asked DH for his input - without even looking at the screen he said "yeah, that looks fine." Grr.

Thanks for all the input. I changed it to "Love Sarah, Denis, & Carolyn" which does actually look better. And I just pressed the "Place Order" button on our incredibly huge order of cards, photo calendars and prints to stick in photo ornaments. I just hope everything looks as good in person as it does on the screen!

Punctuation-wise, the comma after Dennis is optional and the one after love is mandatory. Technically "Love Sarah, etc" with no comma after love is a command (You must love Sarah).
