View Full Version : So, about those rectal thermometers . . .

. . . they can go orally, too, right? So, let's say you ran out of sheaths a long time ago, and eventually you stopped buying them and just used it without, and you always clean it really, really, really well, with purell all over the darned thing every time. And let's say that you now want to use it orally. Whaddya'll think?

Oh my. I don't think I would. If you do, don't *ever* tell him. I don't think he'll ever forgive you. :P

If you cleaned it really well, I'd say why not. Growing up my mom had one thermometer (and it was glass and mercury) and no plastic sheaths. Of course, being a thin glass rod it was probably easier to clean, but it was used where needed. When I graduated to being able to use it orally, I never gave it a second thought that my sisters (5 and 8 years my junior) were not old enough to do so.

Depending on how it's calibrated it may or may not work right orally or may or may not think it's in the right place. I totally wouldn't do it :) Oral digital thermometers are like $5.

For the record, one of my thermometers says it's oral/rectal/underarm.

Listen,
The only difference between an oral and rectal thermometer is taste...
I say it's fine...

and wicked gross.

Nope, couldn't do it. If I was desperate I might cover it with some saran wrap. Or just use it under arm and add a degree. But in the mouth - just couldn't do it!

No, no, no! That is just way too gross!
I always use mine with the covers & even so DH won't let me use it orally (with a brand new cover on it).

Oh I couldn't. I just recently bought a new rectal thermometer that reads a temp in 10 seconds...our old one took too long. But we have the "adult" oral one that DC will use when he's ready for that.

I have used the rectal thermometer in the armpit tho that didn't freak me out as much as if I were to think about using it orally.

Honestly, I couldn't do it. In fact I just threw away one of our thermometers because I couldn't remember it it was rectal or oral. Just not a chance I'm willing to take.

Ewwww! No way. I do however use one that has been used rectally under their arms. But in their mouths. Noooooo!

Couldn't do it. I threw out my old oral one when DH decided to use it on our then 4mo son because he "couldn't find the normal thermometer, and this one seemed okay to use."

The voice of dissent: I think it's just fine.

Wash it really well, and make sure to get all the purell off of it--that wouldn't be good to ingest.

Nope. Couldn't do it. I have two thermometers. One for oral, one for rectal.

Of all the things to cheap out on, I think this isn't one of them. Maybe I'd use it under the arm, if it were the middle of the night and I had a sick baby. A decent thermometer is under $10 at the drugstore.

I guess I'm also in the minority here. I say use it. As long as you have washed it really well.

Gosh, I've touched poop with my fingers & have since put them in my kids' mouths, after *very* thorough washing, of course.

I'm assuming that this is something that you need to use now & going to the store isn't an option. Next time you're at the store, just buy another one for future.

Hope everyone's feeling well at your house.

Actually, my house is a disaster. DS has had a high fever for 4 days, in the 103s and 104s, and I have, count 'em 4 thermometers. Well, 5, actually, but that's my coveted real live glass & mercury thermometer, which is the only one I acutally trust but can't use on DS. So, I have the digital one we came home from the hospital with, the digital one that came in a gift set, the non-mercury glass one I bought the other day, and the new digital one I bought the other day. And the ear one that's a piece of crap. When 104.7 happened and not all of them were quite matching, I wanted to try to stick one in his mouth (2 yo) and see what it said, but they've all been in his rear end, so I was like, hmm. In the end, I just figured 104 vs. 104.7 is gonna put me in a panic either way. But it got me thinking, well, whaddyall do? So, I asked.

I have to admit that a temp of 104 would put me in a panic anyway, but I tend to be a high-strung mama.

Hope your little guy is feeling better. Give him lots of hugs from us.
