How to find the best car rental deals?

I am going to be traveling to the LA / San Diego area this Spring and will need a full size SUV (Expedition, Yukon or the like). I am looking for good deals, but my tried and true sites are letting me down. For example, if you specify SUV I can find a good deal on an Explorer, but not an Expedition since it is in a different class.

I have gotten pretty good a looking for airfare deals, but I don't have a lot of car rental experience ... anyone out there have any secrets that they care to share? Thanks so much!

Try Hotwire. You can choose car class (so you know it's a full-size SUV) and on-airport, and they'll show you rate before you book. We just saved $100 (for a 10 day rental) over the cheapest fare we could find anywhere else.

I just tried hotwire, but they only show one class of SUV, which will be too small for my needs. This is the problem I am finding most places online. Any other suggestions?
