View Full Version : should i bring my tickers back and a siggie?

i know it makes it easier for me to remember details about people and realize who is posting when they have a siggie and/or tickers...maybe i should extend the same courtesy? i dont think i will ever put another avatar up, but the tickers couldn't hurt, right?

ETA: and are any of you preggos who have preggo tickers worried that some wacko will glean enough info from the board and your ticker to try and come steal your newborn? i'm terrified of this happening and i know it seems irrational, but i never give away my actual due date...(that's right even those of you who think you know it, that's not actually it...SORRY!) there were two instances of newborn abduction here recently and i'm really really scared about it....

I think any siggie helps you remember the person better than just a username. I would be very cautious about putting actual personal info. We all feel close to one another, but any stranger can read this board & you don't know what kind of crazy they are. (Heck, I can be an axe murderer for all you know!)
I say you have to make the choice you are comfortable with, but you can never be too careful.

I'm not too worried about someone knowing my due date...because the chances that DD will actually arrive on that day are slim to none! It's not like any random at the mall could see us and not figure out that I am about to have a baby and that DD's name is Allison, kwim?

I can understand why you feel that way. Even if you don't put your exact due date, I always like seeing tickers. Like you said, it helps me remember who is posting. I often recognize when people have updated their siggies or tickers, when I usually can't remember what I had for dinner last night! But that's just me..... :-)

Megs, I'm actually okay with having a due date ticker up, but I became VERY uncomfortable with the old birthday ticker I had up for Luke. I realized that while it did say how old he was, it also told anyone out there who was looking and interested his exact birthday, month, day, and year. I was much more concerned about that. I'm not exactly sure what someone would do with that info, considering I don't post last names or anything, but better safe than sorry!

I do love reading people's interesting siggies, esp. the ones with clever quotes or links to other off-shoot boards, such as the new book club or the knitting group. I think it's fun. :)

Having a siggie (not so much a ticker, tho) does help me remember who's who. You don't have to put your name or your DC's name but something like "Mama to the a very hungry baby who never wants to sleep" or "DM to a beautiful boy who loves to say NO!" - those I find more mememorable than the ones that look like this: DD 01/02/03. Another option is I've seen some people have a quote or statement at the bottom - it has nothing to do with their personal info but it does give a peek into their personality. One comes to mind is punkrockmama - "I'm not stupid, I just don't proofread" - I did this from memory, so that's how good something like that works. BTW, punkrockmama, if you read this, I think it's a pretty cool and funny comment.

Speaking of this topic, I sometimes wonder if anyone out there actually knows who I am when I post. There's definitely a few of you who do, but other than those, does the general BBB "regular" audience recognize me? If you recognize my login, I hope you don't think, "ughhh, here's another stupid question/post" :). I'm probably the only one who wonders this. I know I do recognize ALOT of logins and actually "know" a few of you.

Just some random thoughts.

I don't know if I'm unusual, but I'm not good at remembering logins, save for a handful of them. In fact, since it's not visible right now, I couldn't tell you what your login is. I DO, however, remember your signature when I see it. "Oh yeah, that's Jennifer, she's the mommy of Adelaide, Bronwyn, and Christopher." (I did that from memory without looking, too.) In addition, there are lots of logins with variations of Jennifer -- JenXXX, Jen999, Jen123, Jenn123ABC -- as well as mommy -- mommyof3, mommyof4, mommyto5boys, mommyto2QTpies. (I made up all those handles in my head, but you the idea, I'm sure.) So I definitely think that signatures are MUCH more memorable than logins themselves.

One of the reasons I do like tickers is that I can quickly see how old someone's DC is, and whether we are in the same parenting "stage." It helps a bit to know if someone is talking about an issue with their 2 year old, or their 2 month old, particularly if they're asking for advice.

That being said, this is a public forum, and I guess you just have to follow your own comfort level.

well after reading the replies i'm thinking there's no harm to a "tagline" type thing....no real information given there...i'm still tweaking mine, but i hope it makes me easier to keep track of! i'm always amazed when some of you remember who i am since i don't have a ticker/siggie...i only remember those with siggies or tickers...my preggo brain just doesn't work beyond that!

BTW, i think Christy's posts are the easiest to spot! I love that frog!!!

It is good to have the ticker to tell me exactly how old avi is, so mudh easier than doing the math, lol.

Well, thank you sister. While it's true that I've lost a fair amount of brain power to drugs, booze, pregancy, motherhood, and the style channel, I do still have quite a bit left. But I type fast and hit post w/o double checking. So I thought a small disclaimer was a good idea.

Oh, and to the OP--Do whatcha like and what you're comfy with. :) I've got a big mouth and am inclined to share (way too much if you ask my hubby). I took the state I'm from out of my profile, but I've since talked about the area on here. My kids names and bdays are in plain sight but I don't share pics. It really dosen't matter though. I know I've said this before but I can vibe off your post w/o knowing what your kids look like, when their birthdays are, or whatever. Yeah, it's fun to have that stuff but it's still cool without it. I remember people more for what they "say" than anything else.

It's definitely a personal decision. There are some who tell *exactly* where they live but won't share a birthday. I'd rather the crazy knew dd's birthday than the city or even state where I live.

There are some well-known(whom I therefore trust)moms I've corresponded with for one reason or another but I always ask them to keep my location to themselves. I feel pretty comfortable posting here knowing that someone who lives near me couldn't get some psycho idea about me or my dc's.

There is a member who was stalked or similar by someone who found her online. I don't know any details but I always keep that in mind when I get an inkling to say what the heck.

Christy is unforgettable w/ her water babies and that cute little frog :). I love Marisa's little fishie too, I want one :)!

Now to the OP. I see you already made a siggie and I like it :) very unique. I am not trying to be mean or hurt any ones feelings but for me I 'recognize' some people whether they have a siggy or not more so than others. But I am on the side that siggies or avatars (personal or not) really help in recognizing people. Share as much info as you feel comfortable.

And like Chirsty said I use the ticker to tell the exact age of my DS, and I loved having the pregnancy ones that showed the developmental stage of DS. I love the different personalities that get shown through the siggies/ avatars.

I recognize you Jennifer, and feel like I *know* you.

And I like the quotations in siggies too :). Punkrockmama is also unforgettable w/ her ever changing avatars tht I love :). She gave me the idea for my fat little Garfield.

OK, nerd alert! There's a great quote from one of the Anne of Green Gables books (Anne of the Island maybe?) that's from a letter Anne's mom wrote to her dad before they both died and it says "I love her best when she's asleep and better yet when she's awake". I love that quote and yours reminded me of it :) My mom said an old friend told her when I was a baby that "there's a special beauty in a child asleep". I think that's cool too. OK, I'm done now :)

OK, I might have to steal that one. I lurve me some Anne of Green Gables. Really, I think I want to have a girl someday just so I can read Anne to her. It's an old tradition in my family. Maybe if I do I'll name her Cordelia. I'm sure she'll be a kindred spirit regardless, lol.

I can't remember when I read AoGG. I'll have to do so again soon. Thanks for reminder. :)
