DH got me snowshoes for Christmas. Not exactly sure why.

Anyway, do I need specific snowshoe boots? Will leather hiking boots do? DH says I can use Sorel winter apres-ski boots, but none of the pictures I've found online seem to show snowshoes with that big of a boot. Our weather here is like Seattle and I can't seem me out snowshoeing when its cold or rainy out.

I think, other than being hugely pregnant, I am good to go with the rest of the gear needed, from my winter running gear to my ski gear.

TIA

You can snowshoe in any shoe that the binding will fit around. I've worn leather hiking boots and insulated snow boots (columbias). Depends on how cold it is where you're going. I've found that when you're moving like that, I stay pretty warm.

As long as the bindings will fit your boot, you can wear whatever boot you want. I highly recommend waterproof boots. I wear my big insulated Columbia boots with them.

Snowshoeing is a ton of fun. It's really just walking around in the snow, but for some weird reason, it's much more fun than that. DH and I got snowshoes a couple of years ago on a whim, and while we don't get to use them frequently (not much snow here), we have a blast when we do.

yes - you can wear any warm boot that the bindings will snugly fit. I've worn everything from high sorrells (almost to my knees) to waterproof hiking boots. DH has even worn high-tech plastic boots. Leather hiking boots should be ok as long as the snow doesn't creep up inside the ankles. more of a yukky feeling than a performance issue. But you can always wear gaitors - that's what I do when I don't feel like wearing high boots.

I love packing a small thermos of hot cocoa and take a break mid-way through (along with a bottle of h2o). I like using poles when snowshoeing... remember it's a workout, and you'll probably get really hot, so dres in layers, wear waterproof gloves, and if it's not too cold, try earmuffs instead of a hat - to let some of the heat escape! I've gotten really sweaty snowshoeing, even just for an hour...

have fun! snowshoeing is a blast!

Thanks for your replies! We have rented snowshoes and done it pre-DD#1. And, yeah, you can really work up a sweat.

Not sure if I'm going to keep them or not. I won't be able to use them this year and unlikely for next year (we don't have anyone who can babysit on the weekends and haven't done anything as a couple since DD#1 was born). I wouldn't go by myself and don't know anyone who snowshoes.

So, long story short, not sure if they are keepers or not. Might return them and get some x-country equipment. Then I can get the Chariot x-country package and DH can tow the 2 kids. He d/n seem to happy about that idea, LOL!
