only two days shy of his 2nd birthday, dylan got his first cast. sigh. he is so pitiful. what a brave boy he was ALL day as i toted him back and forth to the ped, the radiologist and the orthopedist. tomorrow we hit the hand specialist. he pulled over the front table (the tiny kind that you put mail on) in his third attempt to get some cleaner i took away from him. it broke his hand in two places. oh, my poor sweet thing.

UPDATE:
surgery tomorrow to put in a pin. poor tiny thing. but they said it is not a big deal.

Bless heart... be warned, it might keep him down momentarily but kids adapt so quickly in a few days you will never know he even has one on...

BTW my daughter was in a body cast for 6 weeks b/c of some corrective surgery, she was 21 months, don't be afraid to give medication for pain. Especially in the beginning there was alot of difficulty sleeping, just be mindful that he might not be able to tell you what hurts. If they haven't already given you liquid hydrocodone (vicoden), they can, and your child should not be in pain. My daughter took it off and on while she was in her cast.

Oh, Liza! Poor Dylan! We went through this with Jack just a few months ago.

One piece of good news--once they get their casts on, they are SOO much more comfortable. Typically, the break won't hurt much at all. Jack is older, so he was able to tell us that he felt better. We only needed Motrin for a day after he got the cast (whereas, the night before, he was miserable).

Where are the breaks? Are they in the hand or above? How high does his cast go? Jack's went almost to his shoulder. Hopefully, Dylan's is only to his elbow!

They adapt so amazingly well--you'll see--he'll be playing just like nothing happened really soon!

Ahhhh poor little guy! We just dealt with the Orthopedic surgeon and a cast for 6 weeks with Mason (my 5 year old). He broke his arm.... of course couldn't have just been a clean break... he broke a piece of his elbow off so it required surgery!!!! Anyways... after a couple of days he was running around with the cast like he didn't even know it was there. He was given tylenol with codine for the first few days and then he was fine with just Motrin. And I'll tell... this BOY didn't learn a thing. He is still as crazy as ever.. running down the sidewalk, jumping off of things! Kids really are troopers though... I'll bet he will be fine in a day or two. It is almost worse for the mommies than it is for the kids!!!!

HUGS to the both of you!

Liza,

I'm so sorry, DS had a cast when he was 28 months, fell out of his crib. PP is right, they do adapt quickly. Just watch out for the cast, I got whacked a few times because he didn't realize how heavy it was.

>dylan got his first
>cast.

The way you worded this I am assuming Dylan is the "wild one" in your siggie and this is his "first cast" of many??!?! :-) I hope not.

I can't imagine how you feel, seeing your little guy in discomfort. I know how I feel when DD gets shots or has a fever. A broken bone! Yikes!

Good luck as Dylan and your family adjusts....
Hugs

susan and ashley-
sadly, he is the mild one. and he still had the first break. pulling the table over was VERY unlike him. he is extra curious, but not dangerous like his brother. he just REALLY wanted that cleaner. sigh.

his brother is the one constantly dangling off a ledge yelling, "but i am BEING CAREFUL, MOMMY!" schuyler IS diego, animals rescuer. so he is constantly climbing something high and unstable to "rescue an animal." i am about to have a bedroom (dylan's now, was schuyler's) painted like a rainforest to talk schuyler into moving back into the room with dylan.

Poor baby! :( .... And ((hugs)) to you Liza, I cant imagine how tough this must be for you too seeing your little guy in pain. DS had to have an IV at birth and they put a splint w/ it and wrapped up his arm so the IV wouldnt move too much. I cried the day they pulled it out because of how he cried. I cant imagine if he had broken bones.

Happy Birthday Dylan! And I hope you feel better soon.

Liza, I'm so sorry you and Dylan are going through this. It's hard on them but sometimes I feel like it's harder on us to see them suffer.

My oldest ds had a cast put on his leg at age 2.5 and it was really difficult.

We'll keep Dylan in our prayers tomorrow for a quick and easy surgery.

Aw, Liza! I'm so sorry!

If it's any consolation, he won't remember it. :(

I have been in and out of a series of 12 (!!!) casts since August. I really thought that it would come off today. NOPE. One more for another two weeks.

I can completely sympathise.

HUGE hugs!

Oh, and definitely have those painkillers ready for him. He's going to need them for the first few days.

So sorry to hear about Dylan. :( I'll be praying that his surgery goes well. Please update us when you can. If it makes you feel any better, one of my brothers broke his leg when he was just over age two (pretty bad spiral fracture) and it didn't slow him up a bit. He actually wore through three casts because we couldn't keep him from running on it even though it was a full leg cast and not intended for walking let alone running. I'm sure Dylan will be just fine.
