dylan's surgery went very well today. in case you missed my other post, he had a pin put into his ring finger to set a displaced fracture. (he broke his hand and finger on wednesday.) he has been in high spirits, running around playing and laughing. i had to force him to nap!!! his cast hasn't bothered him much at all. our only issue is trying to figure out how to elevate his hand and try to get some ice on it! he is too active to cuddle!!

thanks for all the well wishes.

and today is his birthday! what a terrible birthday present!

Happy Birthday, Dylan! Glad to hear that you are on the mend (now, sit still and let your mama give you some TLC)!

Liza,
Oh what a bummer (re: needing a pin in his finger). I had a pin put in a unstable finger fracture at 13. It wasn't fun! But I know recovery is much much smoother at Dylan's age.

I'm glad he's feeling better! I hope he enjoys his birthday anyway.

We elevated and iced Jack's arm all at once--by propping it up on a few pillows and putting the ice right on it.

We tried to prop his arm each night. But usually, he would pull it off the pillows while he was sleeping. Swelling was only an issue for a few days for us.

Good luck, and keep us posted on how he's doing.

Liza, are they going to have to take the pin out, or is it permanent?

I'm glad that he's doing so well. Tomorrow, though, might not be the same story. The second day has *always* been worse for me.

Instead of trying to get the ice where the cast is, put it at his elbow joint, and it will cool the bloodflow to his hand.

As far as elevating it, maybe a new DVD and pillows on the couch?!

Good luck and I'm glad he's OK

hugs

Oh, I'm so glad things went well today! What a horrible way to spend your birthday. Sounds like he's bouncing back wonderfully. Sometimes, happy kids are just too happy to realize they "should" be feeling bad. Hope the good spirits and good recovery continues.

thanks SO much for the ice advice!! we have a "corn bag" in the freezer that would sit nicely under his elbow during movie time or story time. he LOVES watching "Cars" and Diego, but he has still been moving around a lot. i hope at bedtime, he will snuggle some more and let us prop it up. i managed to carry him around in a mei tai for a while with his arm straight up. maybe i will try that again tomorrow on a walk with the cold pack wedged in against his elbow.

You're welcome. ;)

I learned the trick from my surgeon. I've recently had a couple major ankle surgeries, and he had me wrap the ice packs (we have those neoprene ones with the velcro) around the back of my knee. It really made a significant difference.

How far up does the cast go? I hope they gave you a cast cover to help with baths. You *definitely* want to avoid getting it wet.

Oh, wait. If he had the surgery today, does he have a 'real' cast, or is it the postop bulky one wrapped in ace bandages? Those suckers are super heavy because they're splinted with plaster.

LMK if I can help. Sadly, I have a disturbing amount of cast history! ;)

I'm so glad everything went well. I told you he would be up and moving in no time. Here's to a speedy recovery and no discomfort.

I'm glad it went well. I had a feeling he would bounce right back... I know Mason did!

Elevating is hard... well it was hard enough with my 5 year old so I can only imagine with a 2 year old! Just do your best... you only have to worry about it for the first few days to a week. Oh and for ice we used packs of frozen vegis... it was easier... molded around areas better!

How much of a cast does he have? Mason had it up over his elbow... long arm cast I guess is what they call it! We used to use plastic grocery store bags over his arm (tied at the top)and had him stand in the bath ... scrubbed him up with some soap and a wash cloth.... had him sit with his arm up to wash it off.... then stand and pour water over his hair... wash and rinse then out of the bath. We tried to wait as long as possible between baths cause it was a pain and he would start complaining that his hand was getting hot and sweaty inside the bag!!!! I am assuming he'll be in the cast for 6 weeks.... it seems like a long time but it does go surprisingly quickly! Will the pin stay in his hand/finger? Mason had 3 pins in his elbow and they removed them when he got the cast off at 6 weeks... that made me squirm... the thought of someone pulling a pin out of my kids bone right there in front of me while I attempted to keep his attention on the book we were reading (HA!)

Well I'm glad he is on his way to recovering! What a Birthday to remember! Don't forget to take pics of his cast! It is amazing what troopers these boys are isn't it!

Surgery?! I was so surprised to read that; that must be quite traumatic to go from fine to surgery in just a few days. Hope Dylan (and you) are recovering.

Happy Birthday Dylan!

Glad to hear he's doing well, although I know the whole experience probably gave you a few new gray hairs. It's great how quickly kids adapt and bounce back, isn't it? :)
