View Full Version : Do you use a top sheet on your bed?

I used one up until I moved in with Jonathan. He's always been against using one. Now, I'm so used to *not* having one that when I do (sleeping at a hotel, etc.) I get all tangled up in it.

Sophie can't stand it either, so she just sleeps on top of her favourite down throw (strange child insists on sleeping ON a blanket), and under her new 'big girl' comforter.

So, do you use a top sheet?

Always use a top sheet. HATE changing the comforter cover. :)

Yep, a top sheet, a cotton blanket, and a quilt. Imagine what I'd have to use if I lived in a cold climate!! :) Reeve refuses to use any type of cover - always has! I'm still going to be trying to buy sleepsacks when he's 10!

I get all twisted in them! I buy high quality sheets but I still like the feel of my blankets better too. I always take them off at hotels- if the bedding looks clean enough (if I traveled more I would probably buy one of those travel sleep sacks).

Ds doesn't use one either b/c he just sleeps under his comforter. Btw, he didn't start sleeping under a blanket till he was over 3yo. Dh sometimes does- we share a bed but we don't share bedding. I like to wrap the blankets all around me and we can never agree on how warm the blankets should be.

During the winter, yes. I love snuggling in between the flannel sheets. During the hottest part of the summer, no. I voted yes since I use one more often than not.

Yes, absolutely. Too many years on the road sleeping in hotels under skeevy bedding to ever go without a sheet between me and the blanket.

I've never used one except at hotels (where it never occured to take it off) and at MIL's house (where I take it off whenever I can). But, we sleep with a comforter cover - I'm never touching a blanket itself. Does that make sense? I can wash my comforter/duvet cover as often as I like, and I buy ones that are soft and comfortable. I learned early on as a kid that not having a top sheet makes it VERY easy to make the bed in the morning!! Huge plus for me. :)

I do what the Europeans do- I use a washable cotton duvet over a down comforter. I wash the duvet about once a week. DS who's 3, had a baby blanket in his crib and when he switched to a toddler bed we switched him to a comforter instead. I think when we switch him to a twin bed I'll either get a duvet like DH and I have or put a sheet on his bed under his comforter.

I voted no but we have a fleece blanket that we use like a top sheet. We have a comforter with duvet over that. It is much easier to make the bed with the blanket instead of the top sheet.

I used to, but my DH is really tall and his feet invariably hang out the bottom of the bed. So we just use a fitted sheet and a comforter cover. It makes it REALLY easy to make the bed, so I've adopted this practice with my kids as well.

I love going to hotel rooms where the sheets are tucked in nice and tight on the bed!

Same here, I am from Europe though. I did not even know the term "top sheet" until I read this thread. Presumably you are referring to the flat sheet that hotels put between the comforter/duvet and the bed. Personally I do not understand why you need an extra layer between your comforter, which already has a duvet on, and yourself. Are you supposed to leave the sheet tucked into bed (just occured to me it's a possibility)? I never do that which is maybe why it always gets twisted and moves around when we sleep. That's why I do not like buying sheet sets because I do not know what to do with the flat sheet. DS comforter is covered in a cotton duvet as well.

I couldn't imagine not using a top sheet! I have a down comforter and duvet cover as well, but I'd hate to have to wash my duvet cover every week and then stuff my comforter back in-- It's such a pain! I wash my sheets every week, but I go weeks without washing my duvet cover. I also have a blanket between my top sheet and comforter, so my comforter and duvet cover never really get dirty.

No, I hate top sheets. I can't stand getting tangled in them.

I move a lot and usually go through stages during the night with the comforter on, then kicked off. I wake up when my feet get stuck in flat sheets and I'm just not comfortable with them.

As for keeping them clean, we just sleep with a comforter which we wash whenever we wash the rest of the bedding. We do go through comforters pretty quick, but that's okay because I like having a change every once in a while.

The biggest problem I have with our "no top sheet" policy is finding nice sheets that sell the fitteds only. Invariably the one I want comes with a flat sheet, and I hate to spend the money and waste room in my linen closet on something I know we'll never use.

Yup, I do this as well. DH misses the top sheet though, so I just hand it to him folded and let him do with it what he will. :P I HATE having a top sheet. I get too twisted up in it.

We always use one. I can't imagine haveing to wash the blanket or comforter cover all the time. DS1 has a top sheet on his toddler bed, but I had to make them to find a decent one. He has a fleece blanket on top of that. DS2 is still in a sleep sack, so no sheet or blanket.

Yup that's exactly what we do! I have never used a top sheet.

Never occured to me not to. DH is tall, so his half is not tucked in. I like a snug sheet, so my side is really tucked in tight.

We only use flat sheets on our bed (top and bottom). They fit as well as a fitted sheet, and I find them easier to deal with, since I don't have to mess with stretching elastic. We have a pretty tall mattress, though, which is maybe why I don't like fitted sheets.

I like the idea of not using a top sheet, but I find it way too difficult to get the cover on and off the comforter to wash every week.
