Hello! As most of you have no doubt experienced by now, the Baby Bargains message boards have been experiencing serious performance issues that have prevented users from viewing and/or posting successfully. In some cases, users cannot even reach the message board's main page. The good news is that the BBB has become a valuable and wonderful community of mothers, fathers, and care-givers who use these the boards as a great resource. The bad news is that this success has meant an overall increase in technical resources which were not anticipated thereby leaving us in our current state.
The Fields' technical team has been working to address this in the recent weeks by attempting to move all the forums to an entirely new script and new server. Unfortunately, technical issues have prevented that move from being successful. Meanwhile, performance continues to decrease practically by the hour.
In order to save the BBB from losing *all* of its content, we have made the very difficult choice to delete certain attachments and threads. We realize that this is going to be a shock to the system, but the health of the entire message board cannot continue to be risked for the good of the all the posts within. Therefore, please note of the following deletions:
1. All attachments that have been uploaded prior to January 1, 2005, and extremely large attachments that are newer than that (deletions to begin Tuesday, February 6th)
2. All attachments erroneously uploaded as text files (already begun)
3. Certain threads begun prior to January 1, 2004. These include time-sensitive and "filler" content, such as birthday remembrances, birth inquiries, off-topic polls and threads, political discussions. This does not include birth stories, timely parenting content, or similar content.
4. We are not deleting any UserIDs at this time.
Please note that some content has been lost recently due to technical glitches beyond our control, including posts during a chunk of 2005, as well as a number of UserIDs. However, it should also be noted by everyone that the Baby Bargains message board has never been meant as a personal or public journal, a blog, or photo storage site. There should never be any expectation of content ownership or retention for any amount of time. We have grown quite used to the availability of our content over the years, but that mind-set now must change. We would like to be able to make the effort to ensure everyone is notified well in advance. The plain fact of the matter is that the technical issues are significant, and we simply no longer have the luxury of time. When we say every hour brings higher risk, we're not kidding.
Ideally, we would like to give everyone the opportunity to save all their posts, and then prune. But, we can't have it both ways. We are doing our very best, and unfortunately, our best is going to mean deletions. We need your support right now as a community, and we are very grateful for it. Thank you very much for your patience!
