View Full Version : What do you have under your kitchen table??

Currently we have a wool braided rug from LL Bean. I love it but over the past year it's gotten absolutely filthy. It's got milk spilled on it, juice, tomato soup & our little DD now loves to throw her entire meal on it when she's decided she's had enough. We spot clean it but it's beyond that now & we're going to professionally clean the whole thing. BUT...I'm hesitant to put it back under the table. We have tile underneath & I'm considering just leaving it bare but I really like the look of a rug under it. So should I just leave the table on the tile with nothing or does anyone have any good suggestions for an easy to clean rug of sorts?

Well, somewhere under the crumbs, splats and dust bunnies, we have ugly vinyl flooring that was the least-ugly no additional cost option our builder offered (we intend to replace it eventually). I'd love the look of a rug, but I have a hard enough time keeping the vinyl clean -- but that's just me.

I know that washable area rugs exist ... I just don't know if they're large enough or suit your style.

Good luck and in any case feel better because your floor has to look better than mine.

we just have ceramic tile under the table and throughout the kitchen. the previous owners kept a large rug under the table for 10+ years and the grout under where the rug used to be is pure white (I know bad choice for them to begin with) and the rest of the grout in the kitchen is more aged, IYKWIM. Just make sure the grout under the rug looks like the rest of the kitchen if you remove it! ;)

Costco had some washable area rugs when I was there earlier this week. Sizes varied. I got a smaller one to use as a mat for people coming in to look at our house.

We have wood floors in the kitchen, no rug.

Just our laminate floor. I can't imagine having a rug with DD. I'd have to take out the vacuum every time she ate to clean up the crumbs and mess. Right now I just sweep off the mess with my broom, or wipe up really messy stuff with a wet paper towel. I like the look of a rug too, but the easy to clean factor means more to me right now. Maybe you could try leaving it bare and see how you like it.

We just have ceramic tile on our kitchen floor, and while we contemplated putting a pretty woven rug under there, we had a friend bring her 11mo. old son over and after eating two jars of sweet potatoes, he projectile vomitted it all over the floor, table and walls. It was such an easy clean up! It literally mopped up in a minute. Later, when I did emergency in-home daycare for a friend's DS, he got all sorts of spagetti and drinks over, on, under the table, on the walls, chairs....I'm still finding bits from his stay. I can't imagine having to wash a rug clean every day...and it's just DH and I now dropping food stuffs on the floor. In all the homes of friends I've been to with kids, none of the kitchen tables had rugs underneath.

I say skip it.

I can't even imagine having a rug under our kitchen table. We have hardwood floors and I love that I can just run the swiffer vac or grab a wet paper towel and clean up after meals. (Actually, to be perfectly honest, I usually let the dogs clean up and than mop after DD goes to bed...they have to earn their keep somehow, right?)

But, if you really want a rug under there, you can get rubber-backed machine washable rugs - I've gotten door mat and runner sized ones from Target, and I've seen other, larger rectangles too - they wash very nicely in the washer.

We have a cheapo rug underneath, because our apt has carpet in the dining ( I *HATE* this - and practically all apts have it!) In the future I'm hoping for wood/tile, I vacuum the dining everday :(

We have wood look laminate flooring. No rug. I have a hard enough time keeping the floor clean, I wouldn't want something that I actually had to remove and clean.

A whole lotta crap. Fuzz, dust bunnies, dried up corn kernals, some jello that went overboard in a fierce escape attempt from the highchair tray.

Oh, wait, is that not what you meant? K, well, that would be linnoleum.

Um, we have the floor. I never thought about putting anything under our kitchen table. The tile looks just fine, and it's very easy to mop once a week, whereas if we had a rug it would be a pain.

LOL, I was going to say crumbs and some dried up play dough. :)

Usually, at least one dog. :P

Seriously, though, no rug - just the hardwood. Between the two kids and three dogs, it would be a fruitless effort to try and keep any sort of 'real' rug on the floor.

I've been kind of considering those new indoor/outdoor rugs from Frontgate (or someplace similar). They're made of polypropelene and you can literally hose them down with soap and water. How cool would that be to just toss the rug in your bathtub?! I'll have to see what kind of tax refund we get...

Just our Pergo. And usually two dogs sitting right under DS. ;)

This was my immediate response too! I would love linoleum. I have ceramic tile. It's cold, hard (glass just shatters into a million shards on contact) and it never looks clean.

A bunch of crumbs and dust. Under the crumbs and dust, we just have the laminate floor, no rug.

We just have the wood floor.

If I were going to get a rug, I'd choose one of those indoor/outdoor rugs so that I could just take it outside and hose it down on occasion.

Nothing but gorgeous hardwood. I love the hardwood in the house and put rugs only where I absolutely must.

Plus it is easiest to clean that way. So I say go without until your DD is out of her dumping stage. :)
