DD has coxsackie (the herpangina kind - all over her throat). I've been giving her Tylenol and Motrin but those seem to only help a little. Anything else I can do for her or give her? She won't eat, she'll drink only because I'm telling her to. Her fever is staying at 100 even with the Tylenol and Motrin.
Also, how dangerous is this if DS who is 2 months old gets it? I'm of course keeping her far away and we're washing hands like crazy but I'm still worried about him too.

When DD had this last fall, she refused to talk for more than four days and the only things she could eat were popsicles and plain vanilla ice cream. I tried everything (yogurt, oatmeal, bland soup, jarred baby food, baby cereal etc) but she would cry when it went down and refused more. She only drank tiny sips of water, which I offered her often. The ped prescribed some kind of solution to gargle and numb the pain in the throat (sorry I can't recall what it was exactly but it had Benadryl in it) but it didn't seem to help. She also had the low grade fever for which I gave Tylenol and Motrin intermittently but not around the clock. I would keep offering water and see if she would eat something cold, and keep an eye out for signs of dehydration. Sorry your DD is going through this and hope she will be better soon.

Dd had it last fall and had swollen gums and sores all over her mouth. Our ped. told us to mix Benadryl and Maalox and dab it on the sores or have dd "gargle"/swish it around in her mouth. I can't remember how much of each to use. It did help provide some comfort for her.
I hope your dd feels better soon.

I had a bad bout with Coxsackie myself about 3 weeks ago. It was miserable! I think you're doing pretty much all that you can for your DD. Piggy backing Tylenol and Motrin did take the edge off the pain, but not enough to put it out of my mind altogether, so anything that distracts her-- dvds, books, whatever-- is a good thing. I couldn't eat either, and lived off applesauce, vanilla milkshakes and smoothies (vanilla yogurt, bananas and ice was the combo that felt best for me) for 4 or 5 days.
You might try to experiment with the temperature of the drinks you offer. I was told most people prefer really cold things, but for me too cold was almost as painful as too warm. If I let my smoothies and milkshakes get a little closer to room temp, that was better. Ice cream wasn't good.
Oh, and if she has sores on her tongue and in her mouth as well as her throat, try having her use straws, so there's as little contact as possible.
I'm sorry she's sick! Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions! We are on the third day since her fever spiked and I think we're slowly getting past the worst part. She will not eat anything cold, and if she does try, she cries that it hurts. Poor thing. So far water and room temp gatorade are about all she'll take. Her throat looks awful, I feel so bad for her.

Mix equal parts of benadryl, pepto bismol, maalo(if desired)...use a glove on mom/dad's finger dip in liquid and apply to sores inside mouth as best as possible. try not to have her drink it. It helps to soothe some of the pain. Small amounts of ANYTHING she will drink in liquid or ice form. IF she cries without tears or has decreased urine please call your ped she may need some IV fluid just to help her feel better and gather enough energy to get better....

Thanks for the recipe! A few questions before I send DH out to get the ingredients, do you use the regular adult pepto or the children's? Also, most of her sores are in the back of her throat and I'm afriad I'd gag her getting it back there with a finger. I wonder if I had her drink a tiny bit (assuming the Benedryl and Pepto are both children's formula) if that would be OK - I'm talking like less than a teaspoon, just enough to get to the back of her throat.
So far she's been really good about drinking water when we tell her. Everything else she tries a little of and then cries telling us it hurts. This virus is crummy!

Ok, I remember now. It was a solution of 50:50 Benadryl and Maalox. Hope you find something that helps!
