We've decided on the Nikon D80 digital SLR but are torn on which lens to get. We plan to use it as our everyday camera for pics of the boys, vacations, sports, etc. Some of the lenses we're considering are 18 - 70 mm, 55 - 200mm and 70 - 300mm. Anyone? We've gotten different answers from the camera stores and we don't want to feel like we're being guided to a more expensive lens for their benefit. TIA!

I would go with the 18-70mm. We have the Nikon D50 and that is the one I use the most. The 200mm and the 300mm can get pretty heavy and cumbersome if you plan on using it a lot at one time. I have the 70-300 as well, but I only use it when needed. Hope you enjoy yours.

I cant say enough about the 18-200 VR lens...$$$, but the only one that you'll EVER need.

I agree with the PP - I have the 18-200 VR on my D50 and it's fabulous. It can be a bit heavy at times but the versatility is well worth the added weight.

What does VR stand for?

Thanks!

I also have the 18 -200 lens. It's perfect. and can stay on the camera full time. It's got everything you need. I have a 70- 300 and it's a bit heavy and I have to change lenses if I want something smaller. You don't have to get the Nikon brand either. I have a Tameron lens for my Canon Rebel EOS.

I replaced my Nikon 18-55 and Sigma 55-200 with my 18-200 VR.

I did look at the Sigma and Tamron 18-200's but they didn't make one with the VR - and honestly - when you're talking as big a range as 18-200 spans - the quality of the Nikon glass can't be beat - the VR is a wonderful added bonus - especially in low light or big zoom situations. You'll pay a good bit more for the Nikon 18-200 vs. a Tamron or Sigma but it's worth the extra money imho.

Where did you guys buy your cameras? I was looking at them online and there seems to be a pretty big difference in price. Are the lower priced cameras legit?

Thanks!

ditto that. we only just got ours (finally - been on the wait list for stinking ever) last week, and i can already tell it's going to be what's on the D200 most of the time. the VR is pretty amazing. i'm still working on ironing out my settings, but the versatility of the lens has already helped me get more reliable shots.

We have the canon rebel and I'm wondering where your favorite place/best price to buy accessories are? TIA

Also, please post internet site if you have them. :)

I was just in this position just a few days ago - thank you to my *&^%$#! dog who decided to go crazy one day and drag my camera (Nikon digital D50) around the yard - long story...anyway, I ended getting the 18-135 and I love it. It was expensive but I think it is going to be great for the kiddos. I didn't really look at the 55-200 since I wanted to be able to go down to the 18 setting. I am loving it now.
