My husband and I are disagreeing about this. He says that a malt has a
thicker consistency and I say that a shake is thicker.

Anyone know???

A malt has malt flavoring added.

Malt has malt powder added...

And...

Do you know the difference between a Shake and a Frappe???

(New Englanders SHOULD know this)

YUP! Malts are shakes with Malt powder added to it to give it that Malt flavor!

I only order Malts so I totally know about the malt flavoring!! Yum! :)

But is that the only difference?? Just the malt flavoring? What about
the consistency?

What the heck is a Frappe???

We went to get some ice cream on Monday evening and I saw a Frappe
listed on their menu. It was listed right underneath the Shake.

I thought I knew the difference (a Frappe is "frothier" and has ice cream) but seeing how I have easy access to the Internet:

I thought this was interesting that in every other part of the country, a "milkshake" has ice cream in it, but in New England it only has milk and syrup and it sounds like a "frappe" is what others would consider a "milkshake"!

Having grown up with Brighams and Friendly's, I always got frappes (now I actually don't get either, sadly, I choose my calories from solid food instead of liquid and I do miss them sometimes!).

And I used to work at Baskin Robbins, so I should know all of this anyway. I did know a malt because I don't like the taste of malt at all! Yuck.

Why do New Englanders always make everything SOOOOOO confusing?? :)

I think consistency is just dependent upon where you get them. I don't think of either malts or shakes being a vastly different consistency from the other....

Some restaurants just make 'em (both) thicker than other restaurants. Probably even depends on WHO is making them that day and if they are ice cream happy or not. ;)

Could be totally wrong, but I've enjoyed many of both items and have never thought of one to be different than the other except for the addition of malt. (Yum.)

That's my understanding too. A malt just has malt powder added.

Here in Utah, though, a "shake" ordered at almost any ice cream shop is what I consider a "Flurry" or a "Blizzard". It is solid ice cream blended with candy or a topping and served with a spoon. It is difficult to find a place that you can order a shake sipped through a straw! Thankfully, Carl's Junior has yummy shakes and malts of the variety I grew up with in NJ.

Most groceries stores sell malted milk - near the chocolate syrup. So you can make malts at home! I love malts. Carnation is the only brand I've seen.

I guess you have already heard about 95 and 128, huh?

Rachel,

I have no idea what you are talking about! What's the deal
with 95 and 128 ?

Besides the malt having the malt powder and thus the better taste (in my opinion), they usually are made thicker. Although, some people don't really know how to make them right so they could end up like a shake.

The best malts that I've ever had are at the Great Outdoors in Dallas, Texas.

I prefer my malts to be a thin consistency, almost like chocolate milk with
malt added.

When I was pregnant, I would get a large chocolate malt and it would be
gone before we left the parking lot. Then, I would pass out and sleep all
the way home. Oh, the good ole days!

I was thisclose to stopping on my way home earlier to get a shake. I wanted one SO bad. But alas, DS was already overdue for his nap and getting cranky, so I was a good mommy and came straight home. Ah, the sacrifices we make for our children!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA....(I love local humor)
95 IS 128. It's that stupid stretch of road between Peabody (I think) and Burlington...

And Brighams... I lived on their Mint Chocolate Chip when I was a kid. Now they have Fluffernutter Ice Cream... holy hell. It's the greatest thing ever. EVER.

Now, we go to Kimballs...(Rachel... how far are you from there?)

I never heard of the whole shake frappe thing until I moved to the boston area. I grew up in CT so I think its limited to upper new england. Here in CT a shake is a blended ice cream drink. Frappes don't exist!!
