I'm not sure where this goes, so I'm posting it here, but feel free to move it if it doesn't belong here.

FIL gave both girls a sterling silver baby rattle made in NM by some Native Americans that he knows (I don't remember the tribe). Anyway, Kaya never played with it much until recently, but Mika has recently started showing a lot of interest in it. She will grab it and yes, she'll put it straight in her mouth. She got upset when I removed the rattle from her. I'm not worried about the choking hazard (since we are supervising her when she plays with it, plus it's too big to fit completely in her mouth) so much as I am worried about possible toxicity. Does anyone know if it's really bad for me to let her play with it and mouth it?

Thanks!

Eileen

Okay, DH just pointed out that people use sterling silver flatware all the time without problems, so this is probably fine. Let me know if we are totally off on this one. Thanks!

I had a silver baby rattle, and survived. 3 other babies, including DD, have also gnawed on the same rattle. (metal, very soothing for teething)

I, too don't think there is a toxicity issue with silver (I could be wrong), but I know a lot of people who give their DC silver rattles for mouthing when their teeth are coming in because it's very soothing.

Eileen...

Soon enough Mika will be getting into the cat food... I wouldn't worry about the silver rattle!!!

It's perfectly harmless. Just don't be painting it with lead based paint. Then, you'll have a problem!!!
