View Full Version : What Are the Top 5 Television Shows in History?

Fairy
05-06-2007, 08:41 PM
You only get five! You only get one list to consider for all genres put together except for news, political, and infotainment shows (like Today, local news, O'Reilley Factor, Meet the Press, Entertainment Tonight, etc.), which I left off cuz they really are their own world. This one should be fun! Here are my top five in no particular order:

1. Sesame Street
2. Star Trek
3. The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
4. All in the Family
5. The Honeymooners

It took me a long time to figure it out, and I might change my mind once I read yours, which I can't wait! I based these on how they changed the TV landscape, impacted pop culture, and just pure, unmitigated quality.

Well, it's a little easier since I've seen y'all's now. :)

No particular order:

1) MASH
2) The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson(I used to write him fan letters as a child. :P )
3) The Carol Burnette Show
4) Sports Night (I still can't believe that one didn't last very long. I truly believe Aaron Sorkin will never top this.)
5) West Wing/The Cosby Show/Murphy Brown/Friends/early ER. (I'm so indecisive. :P)

LOL, yeah, me too.

MASH
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Star Trek or Babylon 5 (ST was ground-breaking, B5 was better written)
The X-files
Mr. Roger's Neighborhood or Sesame Street

A hybrid list, in no order, from me and dh:

1. The Simpson's
2. Monty Python's Flying Circus
3. Sex and the City
4. can't pick which sci-fi show...Star Trek, ST the Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate...
5. The Wonder Years

MASH, Seinfeld, Friends and shows like The Honeymooners, All in the Family, The Cosby Show and Family Ties should probably be on there too but I went with my personal aesthetics (and what I have seen!).

In no particular order:

1. Firefly (too bad they canceled it after the first season...)
2. Star Trek
3. Sesame Street
4. The Simpsons
5. The Daily Show (or does that count as "infotainment"??)

Actually, I had a hard time deciding between Star Trek (classic or next generation), Babylon 5, or Stargate...but since the original Star Trek series was what totally hooked me on sci-fi I went with that.

Sarah :)

Also in no particular order:

M*A*S*H
Saturday Night Live!
The Cosby Show

I can't come up with more that are on the same level as these, although I personally love Friends and Cheers.

I can't even believe that not ONE of you posted my number 1 show...

1. Welcome Back Kotter!
2. CHiPs
3. Knight Rider
4. 90210
5. Melrose Place.

Goodness. I am surprised.

Firefly was THE BEST. I can watch Serenity over and over and over and never get bored. "You wanna run this ship?!" "Yeah!" "Well ... You can't!"

Daily Show is infotainment, but it's REAL borderline. Good choices!

1 Friends
2 Sex in the City
3 Frasier
4 Seinfeld
5 Happy Days

i based my list of what make me HAPPY!!! friends made me LAUGH, sex in the city made me feel like i was out of my world and into a world to which i would never belong, which was exciting to me. frasier made me think of my dad. seinfeld made me laugh and think and is still fun to talk about with most anyone. and happy days... sigh... it was my sister and my fav show and it just brings me back to my childhood.

mash and cheers are definitely contenders.

and grey's is my current fav.

- Seinfeld/Friends (to me, they're basically the same show, just different time periods)
- Star Trek
- ER
- The Simpsons
- Gilmore Girls (okay, not really that significant in TV history, but it's my all-time favorite :-) )

Best things about Welcome Back Kotter:

1. Juan "I'm a Puerto Rican Jew" Epstein.
2. Up your nose with a rubber hose!
3. Ooh! Ooh-ooh!
4. <clock in deep voice> Hi there. <clock out>
5. I loved that Horshack wedding episode. Stupid and shark jumpy, but I don't care.

Woo hoo! Another Firefly fan! We "rented" the whole series and movie from Netflix and watched it all at once. It was really cool! I suppose instead of Buffy, I should have said "Josh Whedon's shows". :)

And The Simpsons is pretty high on my list as well.

My favs in no particular order:

Cosby Show
Wonder Years
Sex and the City

eta: Oh, Seinfeld is up there, and Friends too.

Current fav: House. Pretty much the only TV DH and I watch.

I almost picked Lucy over The Honeymooners, neither of which I'm specifically a fan of (not that I dislike them, either). But I picked Honeymooners cuz it was groundbreaking and defined the sitcom as we know it. Lucy was longer-running and funnier, but it came after and had Gleason to thank for it. So, I edged out Lucy by an nth.

Oh, Buffy. More we have in common. I love Buffy so much it hurts. HURTS! Ya know, he continued the series in comic books (ok, graphic novels, whatever). I need to get me a copy! I'm just totally in flove with the buff. I'm all about Spike and Willow. Love them so much. Big Spuffy shipper. My fave eps of Buffy in order:

1. Once More with Feeling (can sing every song chapter and verse; some well!)
2. Hush (just a masterpiece)
3. The Body (sobbing)
4. Dopplegangland (And I think I"m kinda gay...)
5. Tabula Rasa (Joan!)
6. Fool for Love
7. Grave (Bored now)
8. Lovers Walk
9. Beer Bad (I'm the only one who loves this ep
10. Something Blue (ah, the first taste of Spuffy)

I also Life Serial simply for that masterful part where in the magic shop where she's trying to get the hand sold)

I think we need a BTVS Appreciation Thread.

Hmmm, do they have to be American? I didn't grow up with the shows here but here are my faves

Seinfeld
Fawlty Towers (love love love John Cleese in this)
Coupling (the original)
Star trek (watched this in India - it's true there's always an episode playing somewhere in the world)
Yes (prime) Minister

I really have no idea what impact they had on anything since I mostly watched re-runs of everything.

I love Beer Bad and of course Hush is just amazing. Once More with Feeling was so much fun! What we really need is a customizable DVD collection where we can collect our favorite episodes. We didn't start watching until partway through the first season, so we got caught up when they went into syndication on FX. Of course then we ended up watching all the episodes all over again!

1. I Love Lucy
2. All in the Family
3. M*A*S*H

5. The Real World

While I liked all of these shows (at least the first few seasons on The Real World - haven't watched it in years), I didn't pick them for that reason. To me, these shows are significant in one way or another.

MTM is a great choice, and I have to agree about The Real World. The very first season was truly important as far as the television landscape is concerned. I was addicted to that show, and lemme tell ya, to this day, I wonder what ever happened to each and every one of them. Some can be spotted here or there, but generally, they're out of television. I stopped watching after the 3rd season (I think), which was Puck & Pedro's season. Now, it's a real shame that show. But the first Real World New York was amazing.

Soap. LOVED that show. Love, love, love, love, love. I was too young to watch it in the first seasons, but eventually, i conned my parents into letting me stay up till 9 or whatever so i coudl watch it. Favorite moments, some of which i didn't actually understand but knew they were funny:

* "I'm Gunga Din!" (I know I spelled that all wrong)
* Ding dong. "You want me to get that?" "If you wouldn't mind."
* "You've come to the wrong house!" Scared the bejeebus out of me
* Any time Jody was on.
* The Bat Campbell storyline and the alien baby

Hated the freakin' doll. Coulda done without Bob.

Ok, I have thought long & hard about this. For me my top 5 would have to be:

5. Buffy
4. ST: TNG
3. The X-Files
2. La Femme Nikita (this show absolutely, hands down wins for music, costume, lighting, set & style in general. It was an intricately woven masterpiece EVERY episode...sheer genius)
1. Stargate SG1...tough call for me between SG1 & LFN but SG1 has been on a lot longer & I have more time invested in it. ;)

Of course, I'm not thinking about any shows that I've gotten into in the last couple years. Ask me in a few years & I may have Grey's Anatomy & Desperate Housewives in there. Plus I really love Heroes, LOST, 24, Stargate Atlantis, Eureka & Ugly Betty. Man, I don't know where I find time to watch these shows.

I'm really not big on older shows, never have been. I did really like Remington Steele & Scarecrow & Mrs. King in the 80's though. :)

It is hard to pick just five!

1. West Wing
2. The Office
3. Friends
4. Scrubs
5. The Wonder Years

My DH would like to include his (i wish he would stop reading over my shoulder).

1. Simpsons
2. Futurama
3. Get a Life
4. Lost
5. Star Trek

I was also a huge fan of Moonlighting and Remington Steele. I would watch Remington Steele repeats when I stayed home sick from school.

I was going to include this one too! Oh my gosh, I loved that show. Isn't it amazing how many shows Katherine Helmond has been on (Soap, Who's the Boss?, Coach, Everybody Loves Raymond)? This was another of my "significant" shows because of Billy Crystal's character, Jody. His wasn't the first gay character on tv, but one of the earliest ones.

Hmmm, I wonder how many mamas on these boards weren't even alive when Soap originally aired?!?!

I think alot.

I also thought the Jody character was very significant. It plays in a very contemporary way even today. You're not gonna get two men kissing or holding hands like you easily get today, but it was a really groundbreaking role. The whole show is truly underrated, as far as I'm concerned. I've gotta get the DVDs . . .
