Have you been to Rome before? Are you familiar with the city's layout? Do you want to stay in the center (near Pantheon, Piazza Navona, etc) or in Rome's environs? Hotels in the city center, while convenient (and my preference!) can be expensive and are usually booked well in advance. I've stayed at Albergo della Lunetta (which, honestly, I am hesitant to suggest as I don't want the word to get out ;). It is a (relatively) cheap hotel right next to the Campo dei Fiori.):

Another option is renting. I'd suggest checking out the classifieds on Wanted in Rome:

Let me know if you have any questions. I've lived in Rome, was just there about a week ago, and am returning in a week and a half to live there for the summer. It's an amazing place!

I would look at www.venere.com and perhaps Rick Steves (he recommends this hotel and I got a reduced rate by mentioning his book, I believe).

Not sure about your budget, we stayed at the Hotel Montreal and thought it was very nice and affordable, plus it is very close to the main train station, Termini. It was 2 adults and a 2 year old. HTH!
