We're taking Sophie down to CHoP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) tomorrow to see her eye doctor.

Sophie had surgery on both eyes when she was 10m old for strabismus/amblyopia (her right eye turned in). Up until about four months ago, she seemed OK. However, we've noticed that her eye isn't aligning properly on a much more frequent basis. It used to be only when she looked up into far corners without moving her head, or when she was extra tired. I now notice it almost daily.

We're really afraid that she's going to need the surgery again (the initial one had an 80% success rate). That is the worst case scenario. Best case, I think, is that she might need glasses. Last time we went to CHoP, they told us that it was a pretty good likelihood she will need them by the time she starts elementary school. That's not a surprise, since both Jonathan and I need them to see.

I've told her that we're going to see the eye doctor tomorrow and that they will ask her lots of questions while looking at stuff, and that they will probably do drops to look inside her eye. I've not told her that she's had surgery in the past, or that she may need future intervention.

So, any spare good thoughts/prayers/mojo would be most appreciated.

Thanks

-m

Good luck to all of you tomorrow, especially Sophie!
I first started wearing glasses in kindergarten and didn't mind one bit (not for the same condition, though). My vision got better after a couple of years and then I didn't need glasses again until college and now I need them all the time. Your post is a good reminder that I want to get my older DD's vision checked out - she seems okay most of the time, but has recently been complaining about seeing "ramps" in some kinds of sunglasses. I think it's just certain lenses but I want to rule out any other possibilities.
Lots of good thoughts coming your way for tomorrow :).

Sending you good thoughts and hugs. I had what I think is similar surgery when I was 3.5 My eyes went out instead of in (well, I guess really instead of straight ahead). I wore glasses since age 1.5 Other kids are mostly jealous when you have glasses at a young age. The worst thing is that I lost them a lot and my mom, of course, didnt like that one bit.

I hope your dd does not need surgery, but fwiw I remember everything from 3.5 and felt no pain. I remember my vision was blurry for a few days and that was weird. And I remember gettting shots that I didnt like, but no pain from the actual surgery.

good thoughts and mojo headed your way from here.

fwiw, DH had a pretty severe congenital strabismus that did not respond 100% to surgeries. he had three IIRC from under a year to 8. because they were never able to correct his fully, he actually has no depth perception, but it's actually turned out to be an ok thing for him. it's amazing how the human body compensates. he uses one eye for up close vision, and the other for distance vision and his brain somehow filters out the rest. no one looking at him now can tell, except me, and that's only because i can tell when he switches which eye he's focusing with - so i always know if he's paying attention to me or something off in the distance :P. he drives, he flies, he dives, he rides both a motorcycle and a bike with no issues.

it will all be ok. i know how hard it is to worry for them especially about surgery/anethesia, btdt. you, jonathan and sophie are in my thoughts.

Marissa- I hope things go smoothly. At least you know you're in an excellent children's hospital. Hopefully they are experienced at easing Sophie's (and your) anxiety, and nothing invasive is necessary.

Marisa, thoughts and prayers headed Sophie's way.

Also an encouraging story, in case it helps. Ally, my younger step-daughter (now 18), had to have the same corrective surgery twice before she was three years old. She still remembers it, but only as a part of her toddlerhood, not as a trauma. Her vision is now excellent, although she wears reading glasses when she's studying for long periods of time. Whatever Sophie goes through, I know she'll be OK. It will all probably be tougher on you, Mama, bt you'll make it through too! Hang in there!

Marisa - I have strabismus/amblyopia that was not caught early enough and so wasn't completely correctable. I totally applaud you for being so vigilant about Sophie's eyesight. My own mother had it as a child but didn't think to take me to have my own eyes examined until nearly 3rd grade.

My nephew also inherited the condition and had surgery 2-3 times before he was 5 and now has perfect vision. His first surgery was around the same time as Sophie's and then he had a touch up a few years later. I hope that you get good news today!

I hope things go well for Sophie. You might want to ask your MDs about Orthoptics. It would have been nice had someone known about them when I was a kid. As an adult my MD just dismisses them. I once saw an Optometrist, however, who swore they helped his son immensely.

Well, Sophie's eyes are definitely worse than our last visit two years ago. Not only are they not aligning, but the doctor noticed that one of her eyelids has weakened.

So, we have a script for glasses, which we will try for six weeks. We will then go back the last week of August to determine whether she will need surgery. The doctor didn't seem to think the glasses will be enough, but he wants to try them first.

I'm going to take her up to Costco tonight to see if we can find her glasses that won't cost a small fortune.

Oh, and Mia was an absolute nightmare for the majority of the trip. Several meltdowns, screaming, crying and absolutely not a happy camper. Thank God I made Jonathan come with so he could deal with her while I was in with Sophie and the doctor.

Thanks so much for all the well wishes/prayers/good thoughts!
