We have United tickets to use before mid Feb and since we will have a 5 mo old, we are trying to come up with an alternative to our annual ski trip the first week of Jan. We'd like to stay in the lower 48 states, looking for a warmer locale, family friendly. It will be me, DH, DD (5 mo), DS (almost 3) and MIL and FIL. At first I wanted to do Sanibel Island, but United can't fly us all there and back the right dates.

Suggestions? I loved the idea of Sanibel - I realize it won't be super warm out, but the average hi is 75, which is plenty warm for us to play in the sand, swim in the heated pool, etc, IMO (especially coming from -10 degree weather!)

We've tossed around the idea of South Padre, Key Largo, San Diego, Sedona, but I don't know much about those places either.

Also, we are looking to stay in a rental type place with a kitchen rather than a resort.

Any advice would be VERY appreciated! :)

United may not be able to get you to the Fort Myers airport, but maybe you can fly into one of their other destinatons in Florida...Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Tampa, etc.

United also flies into Puerto Rico - not part of the lower 48, but still warm that time of year and not that much farther in an airplane.

One other option is San Antonio - the Riverwalk, Sea World, and I think an amusement park is there.

I love San Diego for a vacation. You have so much to do downtown, as well as Legoland and the Animal Park is just a short drive away.

I guess San Diego would get my vote! It's super family friendly.... Sea World, The SD Zoo, Legoland, Wild Animal Park, Coronado Island (the Hotel Del Coronado is FANTASTIC!), Belmont Park, Seaport Village

Here is a great site to research hotels and check Trip Advisor as well

A couple of families from DS's Tae Kwon Do studio were talking about their trip to the Pacific Palisades resort up in Carlsbad (adjacent to Legoland). They said they have 1 & 2 bdrm CONDOs (in addition to the hotel) and their pool/waterpark area is really cool for the kids! Might be worth looking into!

Only thing to keep in mind is that there is a chance that San Diego might not be that warm in january. Could be rainy! Could also have a heatwave.... never know! But being coastal there could be a lot of marine layer then!

Good Luck with your decision.

My other thought would be Mexico.... Cabo San Lucas or Cancun. OR a Cruise... if you go with Carnival or Norwegian your DS will be able to participate in the kids club programs. Carnival changes diapers, Norwegian pages you when a diaper needs changing!

We loved Club Med in Florida for their fantastic kid's clubs and plethora of activities. In January, the Club Med, Ixtapa, Mexico will have just finished their $15million remodeling project so it's suppose to be very luxurious.

I know you said you would prefer a rental place to a resort but the Club Med food is incredible and so are their children's clubs. The Ixtapa resort will accommodate children starting at 4 months old. It would give you some time alone with your husband....
