dh & I are celebrating our 10 year anniversary later this summer and had a romantic getaway all planned. He now has to change his vacation time due to a work conflict, and the inn we were going to stay at in Vermont isn't available anymore...He picked the inn in VT and I was fine with it, but now that I'm involved in the plans, I told him maybe the finger lakes would be nice. Does anybody have any recs for a romantic place to stay, one with a good restaurant, maybe even on the grounds of a vineyard? We would love a place where we can just relax while enjoying good wine and food...

Thanks!

I have never been, but Taughannock Farms Inn (ta-GA-neck) in Ithaca is on the western shore of Cayuga Lake and probably has nice views. When I went to school in Ithaca, it was considered a very nice restaurant.
http://www.travel-watch.com/ITHACA.htm gives some info.

Also, there are many wonderful looking and sounding B&B's and inns listed at
http://www.visitithaca.com/lodging/search.cfm
Many mention creeks and ponds for swimming right on the grounds, and some sound like they are very near some waterfalls at Treman State Park or Buttermilk Falls State Park, both of which are spectacular.

Mary,

This is where I want to go away for the weekend :).

I'm from the area, but have never gotten away for the weekend. Let me think about it and see what people say is a nice place on a vineyard.

You can stay at a castle, an inn or a manor at this place that also has a winery and is on the lake

I am in dc right now and can't comment too much. there are a million places that are nice. mirabeu is beatiful, although not on the lake. it depends on what lake you want to stay on or if you want to move around. there are tons of good restaurants around. I will add more when I get home this week.

Geneva on the Lake is supposed to be beautiful. I haven't stayed there, but my mom has and she loves it. http://www.genevaonthelake.com/

I don't think it's on a vineyard per se, but the Seneca wine trail is very close by and has some nice wineries.

This is where my DH proposed: http://www.sutherlandhouse.com/index.htm. It is in Canandaigua but is, unfortunately, not on the lake. We've been there twice ~ both times we had a wonderful breakfast and the room (same both times) was great! Canandaigua is a cute little town but it is probably the farthest west of the more touristy villages so you would probably have to drive a little while to visit other villages. It is close to the wine trail, though.

I haven't lived in upstate NY for a few years but, last I heard, Geneva-on-the-Lake was very nice. Obviously, there are lake views. :)

Have you looked into Skaneatles (sp?)? it is a very quaint town just outside of Syracuse. The last time that we were there we had a great meal at a "trendy" restaurant on the lake. Oh...how I miss normal dinners! :)

Have fun planning your trip! Oh...I am soooo jealous...a romantic getaway...aaaahhhhhh! And...Happy Anniversary!

ETA: This is obviously nowhere near the Finger lakes but I thought that I'd throw this out there for your consideration: http://www.mohonk.com/index.cfm. I've been wanting to go to Mohonk Mountain House for YEARS ~ ever since I saw the amazing VISA commercial. :) You might have even been but I thought that it might be an option with the insane gas prices. Save more on gas ~ splurge more on the vacation! :) I could have sworn that there were wine trails along the Hudson but there is no mention on the website. Then again, this is a spa/recreational property ~ no need to you to leave as far as they are concerned, right? ;) Ohhhh...I miss winery tours ~ cannot do that with kiddos!! Then, again, I miss wine...PERIOD!

Thanks for all the recs! I'm going to look into them today. Sharyn, Mohonk is nice, we have stayed there before. One of the great things about it is it is close enough to the Culinary Institute, and yes it is close to many hudson valley wineries.
