Around here, it's lightnin' bugs. I actually didn't even know anyone called them fireflies until I went to college.

In Ohio, where I grew up, they're lightning bugs. We don't have them in Colorado, so I don't know what they're called here. :)

I'm always excited to go home in the summer and see them flying around!

Lightening bugs! I hadn't heard fireflies until I was older too.

We called them lightning bugs, too, but I had heard them called fireflies. Actually, I thought fireflies were a different bug growing up. I didn't realize they were the same thing until I got older!

I alternate between the two, always have.

I like fireflies better.

Yep, I didn't vote because I've always alternated between the two. I like Fireflies better too.

We didn't have them where I grew up, but would say firefly more often than lightening bug.

Same here. I like fireflies better, too.

I lived in Oklahoma when I was young (for 4 years) and they were called lightning bugs there. I think thats where I picked it up.

My family is all from NH. I can just hear them saying that now.

I call them both also by the way.

OMG, that is too freakin' funny!

I say Fireflies, but unless the ones at Disneyland count, I've never seen any.

So funny to see this. We've been reading The Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carle to DS. He picked up on the word "fireflies" and began saying it about a month ago. DH and I have always called them lightening bugs. In the south, we rarely hear the name fireflies. So it's always funny to hear DS say it.
