DS just cut his first two teeth and today and yesterday his nose has been a little runny.

I'm guessing he has a mild cold since lately everything goes into his mouth, but I've also heard that some drs. say that teething can cause a runny nose. So I'm not sure! It sure is coincidence if it's a cold because he just cut the teeth a few days ago. He doesn't have any other cold symptoms (well, he isn't sleeping good at night but that could be the teeth).

Although it took a long time for me to figure it out! I can't remember how many times I thought, "poor DS, not only is he getting new teeth, but he also has a cold," before I realized that it was just a runny nose and it was probably BECAUSE he was teething, not in addition.

I just took DS to the doctor this morning. He is also teething and having a slight fever, loose stools and slightly runny nose.

The doctor said that the whole teething causes all these other things is an old wives tale. She said there is nothing that teething causes other than the itchy gums and pain in the mouth. Everything else is probably a virus thats going around.

I think it might be the fact that kids put everything in their mouth because of the itching gums. Anyways, coming back to the topic, my whole teething belief system was thrown off this morning.

Yeah, I don't think I totally belive it's an old wives tale since it happened every time. I do think that it doesn't happen for some kids or different things happen for different kids. A runny nose doesn't make as much sense as say a fever would (if teeth are coming through I can totally see the body reacting with a low fever). But I understand if you don't believe it. For me, I'll keep believing it, particularly since I saw it firsthand.

DD's ped said that teething caused DD to put everything in her mouth because chewing feels good when cutting teeth, and it was the germs on the stuff that gave her the cold/fever/etc.

J is cutting tooth #4 - #3 came in last week - and each time he has a runny nose and a low grade fever. I don't know if it's directly associated or due to the putting everything in his mouth syndrome as PP, but it happens each time.
Poor kiddos. :( It can't feel good at all.

Yes. I kept DD home more than once thinking she was getting a cold only to find a new tooth erupt.

I love them most when they are sleeping.--Me

My pediatrician (whom I adore) told me the same thing. But it sure seemed to happen every time with my kids too!
