I wanted to start this thread because over my 16yrs of being a mom I have run into lots of home remedies that work wonders but most of these I either figured out or found out about AFTER the fact. I thought it would be fun and informative to post any that you feel others may find useful.

Heres mine:

When a child is covered in paint or deck stain baby oil or olive oil will remove it just oil them down and wipe with paper towels.

Bee Stings -- mix powdered meat tenderizer ( white powdered stuff in the spice section at the store) with vinegar to a paste apply with in a few minutes of the sting takes away the "sting" and keeps swelling down

toy handcuffs ( walmart 2.96) connected to a table & chair leg will keep your child from moving them around to climb on.

you can make your own pedilyte -- when you need it you have 2 sick kids and your DH is out of town...

Plain unsweetened yogurt applied directly to a yeast diaper rash works in the meantime while you wait for DH to pick up the antifungal cream on his way home from work (and you don't dare take baby out because he has gross explosive diarrhea from the antibiotics he's on and you know he'll blow out everywhere while you're at the store or better yet in the carseat). I'm a wimp :-)

This will also work on a vaginal yeast infection for vulva irritation(apply a thin layer to the outer area that itches).

Can't wait to hear more!

If your child has a terrible cough rub VICKS vapor rub (regular strength not baby) on the bottom of their feet and place socks on. It should make the cough go away or become much better within 10 minutes. I have tried it on all my children multiple times and it works WONDERS!

I have some but they probably aren't very good ones.

If you are camping and someone steps on a bee hive (the ones that are in the ground) or is attacked by bees and you have nothing on hand, make a paste by spitting in the mud and apply it to the stings (this saved my mom's life once).

Gargle in salt water for sore throats and canker sores.

oh, shoot. I had another one and forgot it. I'll add it later if I think of it...

Not so much a home remedy but something I had to learn thanks to DS...

Hand sanitizer takes ink stains out of clothes!

Well I have nothing to add, 'cause I have no idea what I'm doing. But, I wanted to say that this is a GREAT idea for a thread and I'm so gonna be checking on this one.

Thanks! :)

Baby powder gets sand to come off very easily.

Best thing for getting the um, solid parts of vomit off the sheets (or the couch, rug, etc.): paper plates. The cheap white ones. Just use it like a scraper. I think I invented this one!

Spray hairspray on an ink stain if you're out and about (even red ink) and throw it in the wash when you get home. Ink is gone!

Great minds think alike!!

I've never had to use this for dd (yet!) but growing up, we had a dog that threw up all the time and when I was the only one home I would use the paper plate to get the chunks up! Ah, the memories! LOL.

PetZyme and Nature's Miracle aren't just for pet messes. They are the only things that work on chronic spit-up stains.

Nothing beats a 'sposie for an emergency spill mop-up.

A decent stroller is good for hauling bags of dog food from the car to the garage.

A paste of baking soda and water will take coffee and tea stains off of laminate counter tops and plastic pitchers. Better yet, it will also remove ink/marker stains from the countertops. (I haven't tried it on porous surfaces, and it has a scouring/sanding quality to it, so I wouldn't use it on any finish that may be easily damaged.) It is also good for cutting through bathtub rings and the icky build-up on bath toys.

A Mickey Mouse band-aid can fix anything that hurts.

ETA: Not a mommy, but full-time nanny to my niece (3 years) and nephew (10 months) since they were born. Just my standard disclaimer about my status!

When your child grabs a handful of cactus and gets a prickly hand, don't reach for the tweezers, pour a little Elmers glue all over the hand, let dry and peel off - the pricklers will come out of the hand as the glue slowly peels off.

Oooo...I like that one! Never would have thought of it myself.

As a PP said, gargle salt water for sore throats, but I like the recipe my ENT gave me better than just salt. It's more soothing and less irritating than just salt...1/4tsp salt AND 1/4 tsp baking soda in 8 ounces warm water.

I would add that 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp baking soda in warm water (filtered or distilled) is great for washing out the sinuses with a neti pot as well. Also, adding two capfuls of peroxide can help with the gargling. The salt and peroxide help with the disinfectant part, while the baking soda is soothing.

A few drops of oil olive (or vegetable oil) and a nail brush will remove permanent marker from plastic. Even marker that has been there for several years.

I don't know if this is true, but our pediatrician says that camphor can be caustic in children under 2. That is the wonderful ingredient that makes Vick's work.

When you baby is crying and doesn't want to take his/her liquid medicine, stick the medicine in the side of the cheek and then blow gently in their face. The air "shocks" them, and the medicine goes down!

This is a great thread!

If you're like me and constantly get busy and forget to pull clothes from the washer and throw into the dryer someone (I'm not sure who- maybe someone on this board?) recommended adding vinegar and running again. It worked like a charm to get the smell out when laundry detergent wouldn't.

You can get ink out with rubbing alcohol, but don't try it on carpet. The ink will spread, then wash the clothes right away. Can also use on wood, etc. (of course, check that it won't affect the finish first!).

Oh, I remembered one. If you have hard water and start to get deposits in your dishwasher, set a glass dish with 2 cups of white vinegar in an empty dishwasher and start a short wash cycle. The vinegar will help dissolve the deposits.

Vinegar will also remove calcium deposits on the heating elements of a warm-air humidifyer and I"ve had good luck with vinegar on deposits in the shower too.
