View Full Version : Holy Cow...He is sick again!

He started throwing up yesterday right when he woke up. Kept going all day until
last night around 9pm. He and I slept on the floor together. He did get sick again at 5:30am this morning but I think it was a fluke. He had started coughing.
He just finished eating a piece of bread so we'll see if it stays down.

I'm calling the pediatrician today for a specialist recommendation. Something
has got to be going on. He was just sick 6 weeks ago around the 4th of July.

Oh no, Corie! I remember your posts about your poor little guy. I hope it's nothing serious! A specialist sounds like the way to go at this point. Keep us posted!

Corie - i just sent you an email. I'm so sorry about Knox!

I have some thoughts. Since ds has food allergies, have you seen a pediatric allergist? Have you discussed all this with them?

Possiblities
1. Food allergy reaction - new allergens, or maybe trace amounts of known allergens

2. Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis - you can read some of my old posts on this. But basically it's a non IgE allergy. About 2 hours after ingestion, diarhhea, vomiting etc starts. Epipens wouldn't work. Kids can vomit for hours and hours until they are completely dehydrated. Very serious. DD has it and if she even get a crumb of dairy, we have to get an IV into her before vomiting starts (veins collapse then). They can die from dehydration

3. Celiac - he was tested, but my understanding is that blood tests are not definitive. They really need a biopsy. There are people that are negative w/ blood but have it. Excellent Q&A on http://surefoodsliving.com/category/ask-the-doc/

One question of many from there: Q. How accurate are the blood tests for celiac disease?
A. The commonly used antibody tests (IgA anti-gliadin and anti-tissue trans glutaminase) can diagnose aobut 85-90% of those with celiac disease. A total IgA (immunoglobulin A) level must be done, because 10% of celiacs are deficient in this immunoglobulin, and these antibodies may be falsely low in this setting. On occasion, even those with biopsy-proven disease may test negative, so it is recommended that genetic testing for HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genes be done. Either one or both are positive in 95-98% of celiacs, but are also present in about 25-30% of the population at large, so an intestinal biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis.
Health and happiness,

4. Eosinophilic disease - this is the pm i sent you. In summary for others reading this (from Amy H at Kidswithfoodallergies.org copyright 2005):

Eosinophilic (ee oh sin oh fill ick) disorders occur when the body reacts to trigger(s) by creating too many white blood cells (eosinophils) which hang out in inappropriate places creating trouble. White blood cells target germs and other invaders; in eos kids, they recognize normally harmless things as *enemies*.

...Kids with eos disorders may or may not also have IgE allergies, but the reality is that their bodies react inappropriately to triggers, which frequently include food(s).

This is a disorder which must be diagnosed by a good pediatric GI. It must be diagnosed via biopsy. It is NOT possible to rule in or out with a blood, urine, or poop test, or by waving a magic wand.

Symptoms include any of the following; only ONE is necessary to justify testing. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain (which the child may not recognize - a child who grows up in pain assumes it is normal), FTT, GERD/reflux. Eos kids also frequently have eczema, asthma, and multi-FAs (diagnosed or not - eos kids may test negative to everything).

Solid medical info at www.apfed.org and www.cincinnatichildrens.org ...

Eos disorder is classified by where the eos hang out. So, a child may have eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic colitis, etc. EE, EC, etc are al

Thank you so much for the email !!

I tried to respond to it but my email got returned to me. I wanted
to tell you how much I appreciated it.

I am planning to print out your post and bring it with me to the
doctor's office.

My migraine doctor today also suggested "abdominal migraine". She
said to mention that to the pediatrician.

Thanks again for the great information!!

Did you respond via pm? I wonder if it's something w/ my email on BBB. I'll check. Let me know and I can send you my email address.

When's his dr appt?

Oh, another thought.. Crohn's Disease.

I also want to say sorry i didn't see your posts before!!! I really hope I helped you all get somewhere. For me, not knowing is so much harder than having something known (even if it's bad) and dealing with it.

I highly encourage you to join kidswithfoodallergies.org....even if it's the free membership. You can post on the main forum your info and there's 9000 of us that can help. For $25 you can search the site and read more about EOS and stuff (i think those are on different forums, hence the paid memberships).

Does any of what I wrote seem to fit?

Keep us posted. Hugs!

Well, I thought it was part of his food allergies. I brought it up with
one of the pediatricians in the practice. (Knox had his allergies tested
in Texas before we moved so I was afraid that maybe the testing wasn't
as comprehensive as it should have been.)
Knox runs a fever with the vomiting. It's usually just a low-grade fever
around 100 degrees or so. The pediatrician said that he would not have
a fever with a food allergy reaction.

So, now I guess I'm thinking that a Pediatric Gastroenterologist would be
our best bet.

But since our pediatrician has been out of the loop on our last couple of
sick visits, she wants to have a consultation with us to discuss everything.
And of course, she is going on vacation and we can't get in to see her until
Sept. 10th.

Honestly, I'm just scared. If you could see how sick he gets, it freaks us out.
He is too little to go through this every month.

I can imagine how sick he gets. It's so scary! DD upon 1st and 2nd dairy exposures vomitied for 4 hours straight - i couldn't even leave the sink (10 months old). They're so limp and weak, too tired to cry etc. It's so hard. I should have gone to the ER in retrospect. We were lucky on those occasions b/c with her Enterocolitis to dairy, they can keep vomiting non-stop until dehydration and shock.

I agree w/ seeing the Ped Gasto. If you don't like the dr though, keep looking!

I agree with the fever not being allergic -- IgE anyway. I wonder if it could still be cell mediated allergies like EOS or something. I dont 'know if fever happens with that. Have they tested his immunities? IgA stuff?

How old is he again? If he gets dehydrated, do you go to the ER? I wonder if some of the vomiting after a certain point is b/c he's dehydrated. I know that's what happens with me. There's nothing left and my body can't handle that either.

Does your dr's office know how bad this is? Can they squeeze you in before her vacation? Do you need a referral? You'd think she could give you one now so you can get on the GI"s books. Maybe even see them asap and the ped after.

Do you have an EpiPen? Is he anaphylactic with his food allergies? I should say has he been? They say it's not if you have ANA, it's when. Each reaction can be more or less severe. That's why most ped allergist now give Epi's. Are you seeing an allergist?

Do you NEED to see your ped to get a referral? I would call and speak with the ped over the phone, not just the nurse or the receptionist. Explain that you want to get on whatever waiting list the ped gastro might have NOW so you can get him in sooner than later. She may understand the urgency and find a way to squeeze you in before the 10th or she may give you the referral and keep the appt you already have with her too.

I hope you figure something out. Poor little guy! Good Luck!

No, I don't need to see her first at all. Honestly, I think she feels out-of-the-loop
since another ped. in the practice saw Knox the last couple of times that he
was sick. This other doc ordered the bloodwork/Celiac Disease test/urine testing/etc.

But I talked to my son's speech therapist today and she is going to give me the
name of a Ped. Gastro.

But you're right. I would like a doctor rec from my own pediatrician. I think
I'll call now. :) Thanks!!

Corie - I can post for you in Kidswithfoodallergies.com asking for Ped GI recs. Do you want me to? If so, what geographic region?

If you want any symptoms posted too, let me know what to post

Just be aware, also, that the Ped. GI doc may not accept you without a referral from your doctor. That is, they won't even schedule you an appointment unless your doctor's office calls or faxes them first.

I checked on the KFA EOS boards and several of them have low grade fevers with "flairs". Also, it's on this list of allergy symptoms

I just got off the phone with my pediatrician and she wants to see my son first.
After she exams him, if she feels that he needs to see a Ped Gastro,
she will put in a phone call to get him in quickly.
