View Full Version : Lady kicked off of SW Airlines - What's your opinion?

What's your opinion on the story about the lady that was kicked off of Southwest airlines for being inappropriately attired? I saw pics of her, while I personally wouldn't wear that outfit, I see women dressed like this all the time, on flights, in stores, etc. The story indicates one passenger was offended by the outfit, therefore, Southwest felt the need to enforce their inappropriate attire rule, and kick her off the flight. Curious on other women's opinions.

The skirt is really short. I hope she was wearing full coverage underwear.
That said, I think as long as she wasn't flashing her crotch she's fine.

I agree. If I don't see body parts hangin' out I'm good, esp. when there are kiddos to see. But geesh if I was her I would watch where I sat down - that skirt was little!

Not only was that skirt short, she had it pulled down super low. So, I can't imagine it was covering much of anything. And from the looks of it, she was wearing a thong (you could see the outline of it above the waist of the skirt through her white tshirt on one of the pics I saw).

Considering what nastiness is potentially on the seat cushions to begin with, I'd be a little leary on sitting on anything with next to no clothes on.

How is it that people think they can go out looking like that and not give it a second thought? I'm all for showing it if you have it, but jeez, show a little decorum with your good sense. I don't really need to be able to see firsthand how recent her last wax job was. D'oh!

Oh yeah. And it seems that she's a 23yo Hooters Girl. Figures.

ETA#2- I went and read more of the article. This supposedly occurred two months ago and she's now complaining about it. When she got on the plain, the skirt was pulled up higher on her hips with her butt cheeks hanging out, the shirt was pulled to show more midriff and her 'sweater' wasn't buttoned. And she's now going on TV with her MOTHER saying she was embarrassed by being asked to change her outfit and wants to sue the airline?! She was taking a 'day trip' to a doctor's appt in Arizona and didn't pack any clothes. Wow. Wonder what kind of doctor!

That was one skanky-short skirt, IMO. But, hey, whatever floats your boat. Too bad for Hooters (her employer apparently) that she wasn't wearing one of their t-shirts for all the media interviews. They could have promoted her to management!

Would they have kicked off a man for wearing short shorts??? Also, the media here in Canada spun it with Southwest's TV ad from the '70s where the stewardesses wore short shorts. What goes around comes around....

As long as she wasn't deliberately flashing her nether regions to people on the plane, I think the airline (and other passengers) needed to mind their own business.

I may question the taste of the outfit but for the most part people can wear what they want on a plane or anywhere IMO.

However, this is such a ridiculous ploy for attention and money it is irritating. From the abc article linked above, quote from the woman:

"I was humiliated, I was embarrassed," Ebbert said on "The Today Show." "I felt like everyone was staring."

A woman who wore an outfit like that in the first place was embarrassed because people were staring? WTH? Someone who works at Hooters? Isn't part of the job description to be stared at?

This is such a frivolous lawsuit so I hope it gets thrown out. If people are suing airlines, it should be for discriminating against nursing mothers or toddlers or some of the more blantant injustices that have happened recently.

That ain't no lady. I think a better title would be "Skank kicked off SWA for inappropriate dress." The fact that she flashed panties on the Today Show and they had to blur it out when she sat down sounds like a huge clue to me. I can't BELIEVE her mother didn't think there was anything wrong w/ her outfit simply because all other older teens/college kids dress like that.

Generally I don't care what other people do with their lives, but now that I have a 3.5yo doing fun things like saying "Mummy, that man who came out of the library is really fat," I would just as soon not have to explain to him about why the lady's bum was showing. I'll fly SWA anytime.

Did anyone else notice how much her clothing had been altered for that photo. You can see where her hipbones are and where the waistline for the skirt is. Unless I miss my guess the waistband is BELOW her girlie bits and the shirt is pulled down to compensate all in an effort to make the skirt appear longer-I mean please, noone has that long a torso.
Yay for swa.

She's a publicity seeking idiot, and must have decided to sue SWA after she got the bill for the doctors appt in Arizona. (where's the eye-roll smilie?) Those knockers don't come cheap, don'tcha know.

I have to assume she was seeing the doctor about the knockers... or other augmentation.

I've lived in both San Diego and Arizona (the points she was traveling between). She looks like my neighbors in both places. What do I think?: tacky-ass

The thought of sitting on a leather airplane seat (most of SW's are leather, IME) after she sat on one in that outfit? ewwwwwwwww

Frankly, I'm horrified that SWA considers themselves the arbiter of what is decent attire.

To me, this is one VERY small step from saying that nursing mothers can't breastfeed in public because it could offend someone.

Maybe because I have a 16yr old that is dating and see those outfits ALOT running around football games and such. I really dont see anything "wrong" with the out fit. Shes young and has a great figure and probably wears those type of cloths alot. IF SouthWest had a dress code then it may be a different story. They dont and like the PP said where one person finds her attire offensive another may find breastfeeding offensive.

I think that if she *did* have on a Hooters shirt, it would've been a total no-brainer and she would've never even had the, ahem, credibility to cry foul over 'embarrassment'.

Even if this is in bad taste, it's really not up to the airline to decide. This is a slippery slope! Unless she is purposefully showing something they shouldn't, they really need to mind their own business.

Absolutly to the PP re: breastfeeding and an airline being an arbitrator of good taste/decency.

Do I think its an appropriate outfit? Would I let/agree with my daugther wearing it? A world of no.

But I sure don't think an airline gets to tell her what to do, either!

This would *not* have been an issue if it was a man, IMO.

Don't know that I agree with that sentiment since she wasn't nourishing anyone by showing all that skin, but I will admit that even I've been taken aback when I've seen women nursing a child with entire breasts out in the open. And they weren't off in a corner doing it either.

I suppose you could say it's a slippery slope but I see a vast difference in maybe showing skin while latching a little one and practically taking one's shirt off to nurse in public.

I also believe that, as women, we have a responsibility to ourselves to dress in a self-respecting manner if we want to be treated as such. That outfit did/does not say "respect me" in our society or anyone else's. The funny thing is that she probably would have gotten just as many, if not more, stares if she'd left a little more to the imagination.

ETA: I don't think the man/woman comparison is realistic. Men aren't the ones who are taught/conditioned to show their bodies. Women are. I think if a man tried to board a plane in shorts so short that his tessies were almost hanging out, he absolutely would have been asked to deplane if not arrested before that point.

Here is a picture of the SW flight attended uniform from the 70's Looks as short as the girls skirt the were "worried" about.

In that picture, it looks like the shorts are fairly fitted. I don't see anyone flashing crotch when seated. I don't think SWA would have had an issue with passenger "lady" wearing that on the flight.

It just screams publicity ploy to me. I wonder if she wants to break into an "acting" career...

I am surprised by the comments that she shouldn't be embarrassed about getting kicked off since she was "dressed for attention" anyway or works at Hooters. Just because she obviously likes the attention, doesn't mean she deserves any sort of embarassment. While I certainly don't dress like that myself, I definitely don't think that it warrants anyone the actions against her.

I do however think this complaint of her came a little late after the incident and that she may be seeking some fame.

If you read the article that Marisa linked to, it clearly states that she buttoned her sweater, pulled down her skirt and her shirt and was allowed to travel AS SCHEDULED.

She's just suing for being embarrassed!!! Sorry, but when you dress like that, you are signing up to have people staring at you. I don't think SWA contributed to that in any way whatsoever.

Thanks for pointing out that she wasn't kicked off the plane. She was just asked to cover up a little more. I'm pretty certain that the picture shown is the more modest version of the outfit, not the one she boarded the plane in. And clearly she wasn't too embarrassed to wear it on national television complaining about how embarrassed she was.

I think we should respect women no matter what they are wearing. Its an easy jump to: "She deserves to be treated rudely (or worse) because of what she is wearing." Now that's a slippery slope...

Absolutely agreed. Fact of the matter is, though, that a woman dressed as she was is almost certain to receive attention from people not interested in respecting her.

I have to agree that the crotch shot on the Today Show was the point at which I said, "This chick's nuts." She was complaining that people were staring...but she dressed to catch attention. She was humiliated that someone would comment on the appropriateness of her attire (or lack thereof) but flashed her crotch on a national television show. Tasteless.

She's got nothing better to do and her mother has backed the wrong horse. That dog won't hunt, as they say...

Ditto on whomever said she may be looking for an acting career or to have a shot at fame. A Paris wannabe.

I also wonder what would have happened if she had a flabby unattractive body in the miniskirt... would she have been kicked off? I suspect she would have been treated worse.

I'm curious... but I'm not about to flash my chubby butt cheeks on an airplane -- no thanks!

Don't ya think that if she were truly embarrassed, she wouldn't want even MORE attention brought to the matter? I know that if I were embarrassed by something, I wouldn't be going to the media and publicizing it all over the country! Being "embarrassed" on that plane has given her an excuse to bring even more attention to her scantily clad self. :-)

Edited for correction

From the picture it looks like the girl is saying, "I'm a tasteless floozy and am proud to display it." And then she goes on national TV just to make sure that everyone knows it.

Is there no shame in the world anymore?

I once flew on Southwest with a woman who got on the plane in super tight jeans and a tiny top and when we got off the plane she had changed into something that rivals this outfit. It was shocking! Maybe they work together!
