As the Fields are getting closer to migrating to a new script, it's becoming ever more important to keep the Forums 'on topic'.

We have been trying to figure out how to keep everybody happy. Those that feel their threads don't get enough traffic in the "right" place, the Mods (themselves) that want to see the stuff in the right homes, and everybody that tries to find stuff later on and can't figure out where to search (great news is that with the new script, you can search individual Forums *much* more easily).

So, we think we have a somewhat simpler solution. We present to you the XLINK.

Basically, you are providing a shortcut in the Lounge (or wherever you'd *rather* see your thread go instead of where it really belongs). That way, it is kind of like a traffic detour for everybody. Comments will automatically end up under the original thread, which will help when people search the topic later on, and the Lounge will remain tidy.

To Create the Nifty XLINK

1. Create the new Thread (Thread A) where it really *should* live.

2. GIVE IT 24-48 HOURS TO SEE IF ANYBODY STARTS TO RESPOND (we cannot stress this strongly enough!). Yes, we all know that it sucks to not get a huge amount of responses, but if we're going to migrate to a new script in the near future, PLEASE, help us make this as easy as possible. We're really trying to limit stuff being lost in the transition. If the Lounge is the heaviest factor in all the Forums, it stands to reason, that's the one that will bear the brunt if something goes bad. THE ONLY EXCEPTION TO THE WAITING RULE IS RECALLS. THEY CAN BE XLINKED IMMEDIATELY.

3. Go to the Lounge, create a new Thread (Thread B). Show that it's an XLINK in the title, and instead of text, copy and paste the URL of the location of the first Thread (Thread B).

4. Once you have clicked OK, check Thread B to make sure it automatically goes to Thread A when you click on the link. That's it!

In situations involving Recalls, please send an Alert and we will pin for 48 hours.

Once we migrate to the new script, we will have a Forum specifically for Recalls, Safety, etc.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We truly do appreciate it.

Where do you want us to paste the URL? in the title, or in the text box? Great idea BTW. Don't know why nobody (myself included) didn't do that anyway.

Melinda-

You can paste the URL in the text box. It so happens that you can see an example here:

http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=37&topic_id=447459&mesg_id=447459&page=

That one is not so cut and dried since it was originally created by writermama, but edited by me. It should give you a basic idea of how it works though.
