We have fallen in love with Monster's Inc! Any other movies out there that are this endearing?

My kids are addicted to Cars, and prior to that Finding Nemo. Ironically Monsters, Inc is the one and only thing that J claimed scared him.

Bee and Me movies are a huge hit too, as well as Shrek. Perfect for Christmas!

Some of my...errr...Zach's favorites!

Monsters, Inc.
A Bug's Life
The Incredibles
Ratatouille (a teensy bit more violence than I'd like though)
Curious George (my alltime favorite for a great little kid movie)
Cars
Madagascar
Finding Nemo
A Toy Story
Happy Feet
Flushed Away
Scarface (no not really)
A Clockwork Orange (no not really again)
Apocalypse Now (see above) ;)

Some favorites in our house, that haven't been mentioned, are:

Aristocats
Emperor's New Groove (this is really funny)
My Neighbor Totoro (this is a Japanese movie by Miyazaki - dubbed in English)
Kiki's Delivery Service (also a Japanese movie by Miyazaki - dubbed in English)
Lilo & Stitch

Finding Nemo really makes me happy. :) And it is beautiful(!!) to boot.

I love Monsters' Inc. too. Heck, I just like Pixar movies.

I really like "The Incredible Journey" (the cat and 2 dogs that get lost from their owners- Sally Field and Michael J Fox do voices). Makes me cry at the end every time. Ds wasn't that into it though.

My brother's family loves "My Neighbor Totoro" (sp?) but I haven't seen it.

I totally agree with Bill.

except for Curious George. My kids find this movie
totally boring.

and Happy Feet. This movie is LONG and the kids don't
understand it and I find it totally depressing.

But, other than that, great choices, Bill. :)

(not including your last 3 movies picks!)

Although, my DH did let our kids watch Jurassic Park. I came
home from the store and found them all watching it. My 3-year-old
son thought it was great. He turned to me and said, "That dinosaur
just ate that guy like a cookie!"

DD#1 is addicted to the "Time Warp" clip from Rocky Horror Picture show. Not animated, but definitely not in the "real" realm either, LOL. No, it was NOT me that showed her that (DH is getting a stocking full of coal for that little foray into YouTube)....

DD#1 now wants to give her daddy the Rocky Horror Picture show on DVD for Christmas. Sigh.

We have pretty much Bill's list. I have a lot of the Disney classics, but am not thrilled with their content for little kids.

I got Jungle Book for the girls for Christmas. It's been ages since I've watched it, hopefully its OK for them.

I suppose depending on your kids and their ages - Tim Burton's - The Corpse Bride could be good too. I have it on hd-dvd and it looks incredibly amazing and it's got a really neat storyline to boot. Zach's still too little for it though.

Don't forget Reservoir Dogs Bill! ;)

Some lesser known ones:

Valiant- (about a bunch of heroic pigeon flyers)
Everyone's Hero- about a little boy who loves baseball (actually produced by Christopher and Dana Reeve- very sweet)
Chicken Little- is a favorite around here too

And the we LOVE the Wallace and Gromit movies. Especially the WereRabbit one. It is just so cute and funny. Chicken Run is great too except for the mean pie woman. I'd rank the WereRabbit movie right up there with Monsters Inc. which we love too.

As for some of the older Disney movies we've loved:

Mary Poppins
Pete's Dragon
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

And I have let the boys see the original Back to the Future. They saw it by accident but when I watched it with them, I realized it's not really scary or violent. The boys idolized Marty McFly (what's not to like, he drives a cool car, he rides skateboards, he plays the guitar, he's funny). They loved Doc and Einstein (the dog) too. And they love the Hughey Lewis music to go with it. The only thing we had to correct was a little bit of the swearing that came out of Biff and Marty's mouth (SOB and holy sh**). I just threatened the boys they couldn't watch it again if they said those words.

Can't think of any others right now that weren't already mentioned...

These have already been mentioned but we also love:

A Bug's Life
Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles....our older DD goes around quoting "I love our family" every time she watches this.

She also likes The Cat in the Hat, though I think it's a little weird. Go figure.

Thought of another: Stellaluna.

Not widely known (at least, I hadn't heard of it until DD#1 brought it home from daycare), but it is cute and has a nice message.

also
Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away (another Miyazaki)

Not a movie, but the old Fraggle Rock epis are popular with my nephews. (My girls are still too young)

My son likes the pixar movies, but Happy Feet scared the crap out of him. There's a big walrus or something that is frightening. He was watching it in the basement family room and I heard him start crying and yelling. We had to turn it off and he asked me to send it back to Netflix right away.

I'll bet it was the sea lion chase scene - that's pretty over the top.

Spirited Away? That movie scared *me* -- it was also crazy long. Isn't that an adult film?

I believe it is PG. It is marketed as a kids' movie and I read somewhere that Miyazaki said it was for kids. I guess I would leave it up to the parents to decide - I didn't think it was any scarier than some of the ones listed, but my girls are still too young for any of these! Now Princess Mononoke I would say is too scary for young ones! But thanks for mentioning that parents might want to preview it first to see if it is too scary.

We have most of the Disney set and so far DS's favs have been

101 Dalmations (Cruella is scary but DS loves dogs so much)
Lady and the Tramp (Peggy Lee always steals the scene IMO)
Aristocats (previously mentioned)
Jungle Book (dancing bears and singing vultures, what's not to love?)
Dumbo (more for the Casey Junior scene - DS is a train guy)

Also - we are just starting the Fantasias - we watched The Nutcracker Suite. DS loved it except the dancing fish, too dark and spooky he said. We're being careful which ones we watch - we will be skipping The Rite of Spring as dying dinos are not our thing and Night on Bald Mountain is way too scary.

Thanks for asking about this;
I love hearing about movies I've overlooked.

We love Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., too --
(so much so that DS dressed up as Mike Wazowski last Halloween!)

But our pre-Pixar favorites are:

-- A Charlie Brown Christmas
-- It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
(actually, any Charlie Brown DVD's are a hit at our house)
-- Rocky & Bullwinkle
-- How the Grinch Stole Christmas (not the Jim Carrey version)
-- Cat in the Hat

Also, there are many very good videos
in the Scholastic Video collection; we have and love:
-- Harold & The Purple Crayon
-- Harry the Dirty Dog
-- Where the Wild Things Are
-- Make Way for Ducklings
-- The Snowy Day

These Scholastic videos usually follow the books very closely,
but with the added benefit of great narrators and background music.
I find them a nice change of pace from the more energetic
"Hollywood-style" animated films.

-- jhamman

PS This isn't an animated film, but DS also loves "Etre et Avoir"
(translated as "To Be and To Have") -- the documentary about
the French schoolteacher. DS was mesmerized by the French
schoolchildren learning their letters and numbers, and making crepes!

Second the recommendation especially for My Neighbor Totoro. I feel it has a charm and sweetness similar to Monsters Inc - maybe because they both have a relationship between a child and a giant fluffy being.

Another Wallace and Gromit fan too - the shorts and Were Rabbit.

I love Lilo & Stitch and A Bug's Life.

DS loves The Great Pumpkin and is really liking the Thanksgiving Charlie Brown, however, he is quoting Lucy whenever upset and so we have all Snoopys on time-out until next week. We really can not have DS calling people blockheads or telling us we made him the laughing stock of the neighborhood! He's only 3.5 for goodness sakes!

We watched the Harold and the Purple Crayon that is on HBO On Demand (not sure if Scholastic or not) and the dragon and Harold being lost in the city scared DS so much he tried to climb up and over the couch. I felt so bad for not previewing before letting him watch.

I love those movies too, Martie was a little scared of them. I think Howl's Moving Castle is not as scary as Spirited Away. During Spirited Away, I had to shield her face when the parents became pigs but other than that scene she took it well.

My DS also quotes the Charlie Brown videos when he's upset,
but thank goodness he only picked up the "Rats!".

I'm always surprised by what parts of a movie
might upset DS; the beautiful Sarah McLachlan song
in Toy Story 2 was fairly upsetting to him for quite a while
(of course, it makes me cry, too, so there you go...).

We have them all, they see a lot of play and in truth I enjoy all of them a lot (well except for the Mayflower one which irks me).

Toy Story scares the heck out of Toby...he starts to freak out. Apparently the idea that his toys are talking to each other and not to him is freaky. Go figure.

We have some of the Pixar movies and a few Disney movies...my brother is a pre-ordering compulsive Disney fan and he has lent us a few that we have not watched yet. Jungle Book is one that we have been meaning to show him.

I am putting together a list to work our way through for the next few years, you all offered many suggestions I never would have come up with. Who knew there was a "Harry the dirty dog" movie??? Many thanks to all.
