View Full Version : What's the difference between a 4 and 4T?

DS is tall and skinny. Gap 2xl's are too big through the shoulders, but slightly short through the length. Target T's in a 3T are just too darned small everywhere. Everything else in a 3T has worked this summer. I was planning on buying winter things in a 4T, but it occured to me that a 4 might actually work better, as it might be narrower and less "toddler shaped". Any thoughts?

Honestly the only difference is the butt. Look at a pair of LE 4T and a 4 in pants and you will see what I mean.

If Truman is skinny, he might be able to get away with a 4 instead of a 4T even if he is wearing an Easy-Up. However keep in mind that many times a T size is cheaper than a regular number size. For example at LE the 4Ts (and even 5Ts) are cheaper than a 4 of 5 in 'LittleBoy/Girl' clothing.

For tops, I think the sizes are the same so just buy whatever is convenient/cheaper.

FYI, I have noticed that for boys' tops Gymboree has stopped making 3T altogether. They just make size 3 in Little Boy and you can only get 3T tops if it is a onesie! So your only choice for 4 there is a straight 4.

Really? i have not noticed that, their still seems to be a 3T and then a 3..i actually only really noticed this a few weeks ago, my son can fit the 3T but the 3 give him even more growth LOL never realized their were two different 3's ;)

In the new "thin air" line they seem to have tops in a 3T not just onesies..maybe certain lines??...

Perhaps! I was just in Gymbo this morning and heard a woman asking about it. The salesgirl told her what I ahd found to be true when I did Gymbucks redemption in July: if it is a normal top it goes to 2T in Boy Boy and then starts at size 3 in Little Boy. However the onesies go up to size 3T in Baby Boy. Look at these as an example:

http://www.gymboree.com/shop/dept_item.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=1946079&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1951423&bmUID=1093039733488&productSizeSelected=0

Now what's weird is that SOME of the baby boy lines DO have normal tops in 3T. The explanation I was given was that if the same shirt is available in Little Boy the Baby Boy does NOT have a 3T size. But if it is ONLY a Baby Boy shirt then the 3T size is there. Well we always knew Gymbo was bizarrly complicated!

From my experience, I have found that a size 4 has longer sleeves and sometimes longer pant legs. I did get a few size 4 items as gifts when my DD was smaller, but still able to wear it. The sleeves were way too long; so I chopped them down and re-stitched.
Also, as mentioned in another post, the size 4 and up are usually a little more expensive. But if it fits, I'm sure that is inconsequential.
Seems that you would like to avoid dragging your DS to the store (who wouldn't) but compare the two different sizes (4T and 4) I think each mfg. has a different size standard.
Good luck!
